Rams fall at Gonzaga, 50-39, despite 17-point outing from Devos

11/28/2018 9:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Rams’ Lore Devos shoots 8-for-11 from the floor to pace the Rams with 17 points

SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore guard Lore Devos put together a 17-point effort at Gonzaga, but the rest of the Colorado State women's basketball team combined for 22 points as the Rams fell to the Bulldogs, 50-39, on Wednesday night from the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Devos tallied her 17 on 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) shooting from the floor, marking a career-best night in terms of field goal percentage. The Kortrijk, Belgium native added four steals, also a collegiate best. Outside of her performance, however, the other eight Rams that saw time on the floor on Wednesday combined to shoot just 19.5 percent (8-for-41). CSU (2-3) was specifically haunted by a three-point third quarter, spoiling a defensive performance that held Gonzaga (7-1) well below its season averages in scoring (50 on Wednesday, 68.1 for the season) and field goal percentage (31 percent vs. 36.3 percent).

Colorado State held a 41.7 to 40.6 percent advantage in field goal percentage in the first half, much to the credit of Devos, who was 4-for-5 from the floor in the first half. Gonzaga only led by three at 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but used a 13-2 run at the start of the second to extend its lead as large as 14 at 31-17. CSU closed the quarter with a run of its own, using balanced scoring – baskets from Devos, Myanne Hamm and Mollie Mounsey – to cut the deficit to 33-24 at halftime.

That three-point third quarter for CSU proved significant as Gonzaga went cold from the floor in the fourth quarter, shooting just 1-for-13 (7.7 percent). The Rams outscored the Zags, 12-5, in the fourth quarter, but were unable to overcome their 1-for-16 (6.3 percent) shooting from the floor and 1-for-12 shooting (8.3 percent) from the three-point arc in the third.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"We did a pretty good job in that first half. We knew they were going to put some pressure on us and play fast. They did play fast, but they didn't get a lot of fast shots, so there were a lot of possessions where the shot clock was winding down. We had the game shortened like we wanted it, but they were disruptive with their on-ball pressure, quickness and athleticism. We sometimes fold like a chair when we see that, but I was really proud of how we battled for the most part. Our shot selection was pretty good. We had the shots that we were probably going to get in this game, but we've got to make them."

NOTES
  • Sophomore guard Lore Devos had never previously had more than two steals in a collegiate game. Her four steals on Wednesday tops her previous best from this year's game against Northern Colorado (Nov. 20).
  • Before shooting 72.7 percent on Wednesday, Devos' previous single-game career high in field goal percentage was 62.5 percent (vs. Eastern New Mexico on Nov. 6).
  • Devos has led Colorado State in scoring in four of five games this season.
  • Devos registered her fourth double-digit scoring game of the season on Wednesday.
  • Junior guard Mollie Mounsey was the Rams' top rebounder on Wednesday, corralling 11 boards. Her previous collegiate best was six against each of Colorado (Nov. 14) and Cornell (Nov. 25).
