Rams fend off late charge to win at San Jose State, 73-66

2/10/2018 7:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Four Rams score in double figures, led by Hannah Tvrdy’s 22 points

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado State women's basketball team held off a late charge from San Jose State to pick up a 73-66 win over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon from The Events Center.

Colorado State (18-7, 10-4 MW) was led offensively once again by senior guard Hannah Tvrdy, who registered her third game with 20 points or more in her last five. Tvrdy tallied 22 points to lead all scorers on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor and 2-for-5 shooting from three-point range. The Seward, Neb., native added six rebounds and three assists to her line.

Three more Rams poured in double-digit points, with freshman guard Jordyn Edwards' 13 ranking as the second-most behind Tvrdy's total. Junior guard Sofie Tryggedsson registered her first career double-double, scoring 11 points on 3-for-7 shooting (2-for-5 on threes) along with a career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Lore Devos scored 10 points on 20 minutes off the bench along with six rebounds.

Colorado State led San Jose State (6-17, 3-9 MW), 15-13, after the first quarter and held that same edge at 20-18 with 7:31 to go in the second. The Rams created their initial separation from San Jose State over the next two-plus minutes, getting baskets from Tvrdy, Devos, Edwards and Callie Kaiser to power a 9-0 run and take a 29-18 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half. The Rams increased that lead to 14 (38-24) at halftime, then extended their run to 12-3 to go up by 20 at 46-26 just under the eight-minute mark in the third.

The Rams' edge reverted back to the original 11-point advantage by the end of the third quarter, and slowly whittled down to as narrow as five at 65-60 with just over three minutes remaining. However, SJSU would cut the deficit no nearer, as the CSU defense allowed the Spartans to make only one of their last six field goal attempts, and at the foul stripe, put the Spartans away with 8-for-10 free throw shooting down the stretch.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"We just made a lot of big plays throughout that game, and had four really good quarters of basketball. They're (San Jose State) just difficult to play. You know no lead is safe in here. As that second half kind of wore on, you knew they were going to make a few threes and then they started driving it down our throat a little bit. At the same time, we missed a few, but we finished it off nicely. This was just a good, hard-fought road win against a team that's aggressive and hard for us to guard. Your defense is really challenged (when you play San Jose State), and I thought we were exceptional."
