Women’s and men’s DMR, pentathlete Talia Marquez are the first Rams to score points at the 2018 conference meet

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Colorado State track & field team scored in all three of the women's distance medley relay, men's distance medley relay and pentathlon as competition began at the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Among the top performances was a time of 11:35.89 by the combination of Ali KallnerEmma KratzbergRoxy Trotter and Dominique Ward in the women's distance medley relay, a time that ranks second in program history (11:21.34 in 2002). The Rams placed fourth in the event among the loaded field, earning five points toward the team standings. On the men's side, Colorado State placed third in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:49.11. The men's team was made up of Trent PowellCaleb HardyBlake Yount and Cole Rockhold.

In multi-event action, senior Talia Marquez scored two points toward the CSU women's total with a seventh-place finish in the pentathlon. The Arvada, Colo., native tallied 3,635 points to improve upon her season best at CSU and rank as the No. 10 performer in the pentathlon on CSU's all-time indoor list.

Senior Nick Kravec sits in second place in the heptathlon with 3,062 points through the first four events. Among the highlights for Kravec was a first-place finish in the heptathlon high jump (6-5/1.96m/676 points), as well as personal bests in the 60 meters (7.10/847 points) and the shot put (42-2/12.85m/658 points). Freshman Dustin Ethridge, who is competing in his first collegiate multi, ranks fifth in the heptathlon standings through day one with 2,686 points.

The distance medley relay is the only scored event on the men's side through day one, so the CSU men rank third in the team standings based upon their third-place finish in the DMR. The CSU women earned seven points between the DMR and pentathlon, and currently rank sixth in the team standings. New Mexico (10 points) leads the men's field, while Nevada (16 points) leads the women's.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head assistant coach Ryan Baily
On heptathlon and pentathlon competition:
"Nick's (Kravec) on fire. He's just competing right now – that's his No. 1 focus. He had a couple PRs today and he'll be ready to roll tomorrow. He didn't quite have the high jump that he wanted, but he still jumped well and he's doing great overall. Dustin (Ethridge) is doing great in his first multi – I'm really proud of him. He's very excited to be here and he's competed hard. Talia (Marquez) competed hard, and just kind of fell a little bit short in the long jump for what we wanted to do, but I was proud of her and the way she competed."

NOTES
- Prior to Thursday, Talia Marquez's top pentathlon score at Colorado State was 3,608. She tallied that score at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi on Dec. 7, 2017.
Nick Kravec's previous personal bests in the 60 meters and shot put before Thursday were 7.13 and 41-9 (12.72m), respectively.
- The women's distance medley relay time of 11:35.89 on Thursday was initially believed to be a school record; however, further research indicated that Kim Watson, Siobahn Everson-Stewart, Mary Ridder and Katie Yemm ran the DMR in 11:21.34 in 2002.
