Colorado State Track & Field Teams Head to Mountain West Indoor Championships
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Eight hours of pavement from the Glenn Morris Fieldhouse and the Albuquerque Convention Center is what lies between the Rams and their goal – repeat as Mountain West Indoor Champions for the men and women.
The 21st running of the MW Indoor Championships commence Thursday, Feb. 27 and go through Saturday, Feb. 29 at New Mexico's venue that also houses the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks' time. It is the sixth year in a row and 11th overall, that the MW indoor meet has been held at the same site in Albuquerque, N.M. Two weeks ago, the Rams were in the building for the Don Kirby Invite – a usual tactic to get a feel of the environment and the competition.
Since the first Mountain West Indoor Championship in 2000, CSU has compiled three men indoor titles (2002, 2017, 2019) and four women's championships (2006, 2016, 2017, 2019). On the men's side, Colorado State seeks its third Mountain West indoor title in the past four seasons. CSU's women's team looks to win its fourth Mountain West indoor title in the past five seasons.
In all, the Ram men have 13 top-3 finishes in the 20 total championships, while the women have 14 podium finishes.
The Ram titles on both sides in 2017 and 2019 tied New Mexico, who also accomplished the feat in 2014 and 2015, with two sweeps, which is the second-most in conference history behind BYU's nine. Head coach Brian Bedard also earned coach of the year honors for both sides in the two years.
Adding to their own expectations, Colorado State men and women has been deemed favorites according to the USTFCCCA conference track and field rating index.
The meet will get underway Thursday at 10 a.m. with the entirety of the pentathlon, and the distance medley relays, while the heptathlon will compete 4 of 7 events. The heptathlon will wrap up Friday along with the 5,000-meter races and half of the field events, while qualifying goes on in the track events. The deciding final day starts at 9:30 a.m. with field events and 11:10 a.m. on the track.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On the women's side …
"We are relatively healthy. Of the 28 student-athletes going down, I think all of them have the potential to score in their event areas. When we are in that position it gives us a good shot to put together a solid meet and a position to be in contention. I like the squad we are bringing down there. They are very well rounded."
On the men's side …
"We have the ability to score in every event except the men's pole vault where we don't have a competitor. That position, which is just like the women, gives us a great opportunity to challenge for a championship. I love going down to the conference championship meet when we have a chance and it's not a "Dumb and Dumber" chance. We have a legitimate chance to be in the running for a title and the student-athletes know it. They are excited about it. The staff knows it. Anytime you're in that situation, it is fun to be a Ram."
