Rockhold becomes the first Ram to earn multiple All-America honors in distance events in a single season since Bryan Berryhill in 2001

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Cole Rockhold of the Colorado State men's track & field team earned All-America honors in each of the mile and 3,000 meters as the Rams concluded competition at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday from Gilliam Indoor Stadium.

Rockhold opened the day in the mile final, where he clocked a time of 4:00.65 to place sixth overall and earn First-Team All-America distinction. The Independence, Mo., native followed with a ninth-place finish in the 3,000 meters two hours later, finishing in 8:09.85 to earn Second-Team All-America recognition. Rockhold was the only athlete on the men's side to run in each of the mile and 3,000 meters this weekend.

With Saturday's results, Colorado State ends competition with 13 points for a 16th-place national finish. The Rams were awarded three points today by virtue of Rockhold's sixth-place finish in the mile, and 10 points on Friday for Mostafa Hassan's individual NCAA title in the shot put. CSU's 16th-place finish is its second-best indoor NCAA finish in program history.

Rockhold becomes the first Ram to earn multiple All-America honors of any distinction in distance events in a single season since Bryan Berryhill (2001), who attempted the same double that year. The junior now has five All-America honors of various distinctions to his credit, as his pair of accolades on Saturday join his 2017 cross country honor, as well as his 2017 first-team honor in the 3,000 meters and 2017 honorable mention honor in the outdoor 5,000 meters.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State distance coach Art Siemers
On Cole Rockhold:
"The mile and 3,000 meters double is very, very tough – that's why no one else attempted it this year. Cole really wanted to be an All-American in the mile this year and focus on that after he passed on it last year to run the 3,000. It's one of the premier track events for distance runners. We wanted to put everything we had into the mile first, and he had a great finish to place sixth and be a First-Team All-American. I thought his 3,000 was phenomenal. He just missed being a First-Team All-American, but to be able to be that close after being first-team in the mile…I don't know if he could have done any better."

NOTES
- Colorado State has had its two highest indoor NCAA finishes in its past two seasons. Its only indoor finish higher than its 16th-place finish this season was 12th in 2017.
- Of the two Rams to attempt the mile/3,000 meters double, Cole Rockhold was the higher finisher in the 3,000. Rockhold placed ninth this year, while Bryan Berryhill placed 10th in 2001.
- Rockhold's five All-America honors (considering all distinctions, including second-team and honorable mention) rank as the third-most by any athlete in program history. Only Bryan Berryhill (10 – two cross country, four indoor, four outdoor) and Loree Smith (six – four indoor, two outdoor) have more, while current teammate Mostafa Hassan (five) has as many.
