Luetschwager notches 11th singles win of the spring

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Freshman Emily Luetschwager tallied her 11th singles win of the season, but the Colorado State Rams ultimately fell at New Mexico, 4-1, at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium on Friday.

Luetschwager has CSU's second-most singles wins this spring, holding an 11-6 overall record.

CSU (9-10, 0-4 MW) went to Albuquerque on a roll in doubles, and the Rams nearly used their doubles prowess to gain a 1-0 lead on Friday. Junior Emily Kolbow and sophomore Riley Reeves remained undefeated as a duo, winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

No. 1 doubles went down to the wire, with CSU's top pair of Alyssa Grijalva and Priscilla Palermo rallying to force a tiebreak at 6-6. Although the Rams' twosome took an early lead in the tiebreak, it would be the Lobos' Hsiang-Wen Huang and Danielle Quevedo that would win, 7-6 (4), and clinch the first point of the match for the hosts.

Quevedo would put New Mexico up 2-0 with a singles win at the fifth position, but Luetschwager would promptly cut that lead in half. The Stevens Point, Wis., native defeated Ruth Copas in straight sets; 6-2, 6-2.

The Lobos would pick up two more straight-set singles wins of their own on courts 1 and 4, however, to seal the 4-1 win.

"Doubles was real close, and Emily (Luetschwager) had a great win in singles," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota. "We had some close singles matches that we left out there. We just need to keep working and believing and we will be fine."

The Rams will remain on the road and will visit Air Force on Sunday at noon, seeking their first league win of the season.

"We need to continue to play with emotional maturity and just be a little more solid than today," Camerota said.

The match against the Falcons on Sunday can be streamed live here.
