Rams sweep past LSU in Michigan Challenge

9/7/2018 11:41:00 AM | Volleyball

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Colorado State volleyball team swept past LSU on Friday morning in the opening match of the Michigan Challenge in Cliff Keen Arena.

The opening set featured 14 tie scores and seven lead changes as the largest led was four. LSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Rams eliminated it, tying the match at 12-12. Colorado State took a three-point lead at 18-15 but the Tigers tied the match at 19-19. Both teams traded points to the end and LSU led 23-22 but a kill by Breana Runnels, followed by a service ace by Olivia Nicholson and an LSU attack error gave the Rams the first set win.

The second set again had both teams battling for the lead as the frame was tied 12-12. Colorado State took a two-point lead and led the rest of the frame on its way to a 2-0 match lead.

Colorado State jumped out to an early lead and increased its lead to 18-13 in the final frame. LSU looked to mount a come-back, cutting the CSU lead down to one at 21-20 and tying the set at 23-23, but a kill by Kirstie Hillyer and a block by Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and Olivia Nicholson ended the match and secured the sweep.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"To be honest, I am not happy the way we played today. We need to ball handle better and I know Kirstie (Hillyer) and Breana (Runnels) were able to pull us out of some issues. We need to learn how to pass on the road better – we're not doing it very well. We're giving away a bunch of points and luckily today we played a team that gave away more points than we did. We need to play better tonight and tomorrow night. That is what our goal has to be; we need to improve."

STAT OF THE DAY
Breana Runnels and Kirstie Hillyer led the Rams with 15 and 10 kills, respectfully.
