Rams’ Marybeth Sant is NCAA’s top-ranked athlete in 60 meters, world’s second-ranked athlete

BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado State redshirt senior Marybeth Sant broke her own program record in the women's 60 meters to highlight performances by the Rams at the CU Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday at the Potts Indoor Invitational.

Sant's time was 7.18, topping the program-record time of 7.26 that she registered at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi on Dec. 7, 2018. In addition to the program record, her time ranks third in Mountain West history, and as of Saturday night, ranks as the NCAA-leading mark and the No. 2 mark in the event in the world this indoor season.

Sophomore Jessica Ozoude placed second in the women's 60 meters on Saturday, matching her previous personal best in the event with a time of 7.48. Ozoude's time ranks sixth on CSU's all-time indoor list. Freshman Lauren Gale joined those two with one of CSU's all-time top marks on Saturday, as time of 55.25 in the 400 meters ranks second on CSU's all-time indoor list. Gale topped Saturday's 400 meters field by nearly two seconds.

On the men's side, senior Ronald Sayles won the men's 200 meters with a personal-best time of 21.29, while senior Nathan Gish clocked a personal-best time of 21.91. Sayles' time ranks third on CSU's all-time indoor list, while Gish's is one tenth of a second shy of his personal best. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, senior Jose Lopez came out on top after clocking a time of 8.18, one hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Kamal-Craig Golaube (8.19). Lopez's time is tied for 13th on CSU's all-time indoor list, while Golaube's ranks 15th.

The Rams won three distance events in that group's indoor debut on Saturday. Junior Eric Hamer was the top collegian in the men's mile run, clocking a time of 4:15.17 to place behind only teammate Michael Mooney (4:12.94), who ran unattached. Senior Carson Hume clocked a time of 8:26.48 to win the men's 3,000 meters, while senior Bailey Ness won the women's 3,000 in her first indoor meet in a Colorado State uniform. Notably, junior Macy Kreutz clocked a time of 2:12.07 in a second-place finish in the 800 meters.

Three field events were won by Rams on Saturday, including a sweep of the women's and men's shot put. Sophomore Tarynn Sieg topped the women's field with a mark of 50-2.5 (15.30m), while sophomore Beau Gordon hurled the shot 51-2.75 (15.61m) to win the men's competition. Rounding out individual event winners was senior Tarah Vijayasarathy, whose triple jump mark of 38-5.5 (11.72m) was the best in Saturday's competition by exactly half of a foot.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head assistant coach Ryan Baily
On Marybeth Sant's performance:
"Marybeth is extremely focused and is on a mission to reach her full potential. She trained extremely hard over the break and it's evident. We've been focusing on some technical elements and she executed those very well today. I'm very proud of her."

NOTES
  • Marybeth Sant's time of 7.18 in the women's 60 meters is only one hundredth of a second behind the all-time Mountain West record shared by San Diego State's Ashley Henderson (2017) and TCU's Jessica Young (2011).
  • The only time in the world faster than Sant's time in the 60 meters (as of Saturday night) this indoor season was 7.17, run by former Kentucky standout Javianne Oliver on Dec. 7, 2018 in Bloomington, Ind.
