Performances in 400 meters, 60 meters among Rams’ highlights on Saturday

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Performances by Colorado State sprinters were among the highlights for the Rams as the team wrapped up this weekend's Air Force Invitational on Saturday at the Cadet Field House.

After clocking the top time in preliminaries on Friday, freshman Lauren Gale turned in her best performance of her early collegiate career to take first place in the women's 400 meters final on Saturday. Gale's time was 54.81, nearly a half-second improvement upon her previous best at CSU and the No. 2 time on CSU's all-time indoor list.

Each of sophomore Jessica Ozoude and freshman Briyana Bunson reached the final of the women's 60 meters, finishing second and fourth, respectively. Ozoude's time was 7.51, while Bunson's was a collegiate-best 7.60. With her performance, Bunson moves up to No. 10 among CSU's all-time top indoor performers in the event.

Rounding out notable performances on the track on Saturday was a fifth-place finish and time of 8.26 for Kamal-Craig Golaube in the men's 60-meter hurdles. In field events, Maria Muzzio (48-10.25/14.89m) and Tarynn Sieg (47-11/14/60m) took second and third in the shot put, respectively. On the men's side, Bailey King finished fifth in the shot put (52-4/15.95m).

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State sprints, hurdles and relays coach J.J. Riese
On Lauren Gale and Jessica Ozoude:
"I was really pleased with Lauren's performance this weekend. Lauren came in here out of high school as one of the top women in the country in her events, so that's helped her, but she also shows a lot of toughness, and in the 400 meters that's important. Jessica is very talented, and we think that she still has another level that she can reach. She's just a great competitor, and genuinely enjoys racing. You don't always find that…it's one of those things that's tough to measure in the recruiting process. It's an underrated attribute for successful sprinters for sure."

NOTES
  • Current CSU sprinters how occupy either the top spot or the No. 2 spot on CSU's all-time indoor list in each of the women's sprints.
  • Lauren Gale, Jessica Ozoude and Marybeth Sant combine to occupy six spots within the top six on CSU's all-time indoor lists for the 60, 200 and 400 meters. Ozoude is on all three of those lists.
