Rams Drop Opening Dual at Denver

10/11/2019 8:21:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving

Divers Holland, Williams each win a board title

DENVER, Colo. – Entering the season a bit shorthanded in the lanes, Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team picked up victories on both boards as the Rams dropped their season-opening dual at Denver, 200-98.

Junior divers Rachel Holland and Skylar Williams both won an event with the other finishing third. Holland captured the 1-meter with a score of 236.25, with Williams taking top honors on the 3-meter at 258.68. For coach Christopher Woodard, it was a great sign of things to come after hiring Chris Bergere to lead the divers.

"Obviously hiring him is going to pay dividends," Woodard said. "I think those girls are going to learn a great deal from him. Rachel and Skylar performed well, but for sure, all the girls did well."

The Rams' other victory came from Kristina Friedrichs in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.90. They entered the meet without Mountain West champion Maddie Ward and Grace Siebmann, another conference scorer, and freshmen Hannah Sykes and Sarah Mundy.

For Woodard, the day was a prime example of learning to overcome and cleaning up some basics. He said the team jammed themselves on some turns, particularly the backstrokers.

"It was just how we need to be a complete team," he said. "When we're missing some people, we're fighting an uphill battle. The hope is we get some these girls back in the near future and they'll contribute as well, and we'll hammer out some details. On the whole, it was a positive atmosphere, and we watched some kids have some not-so-great swims and then come back and have some good ones."

Woodard was able to see his freshman class acclimated to the college waters, with Katelyn Bartley, Sydnee Whitty, Caroline Perry and Amanda Hoffman all coming up with top-three finishes in races. Bartley placed second in the 200 individual medley t 2:09.50, with Marie Goodwyn third in 2:11.79.

Whitty placed third in the 50 free (24.52), Amanda Hoffman was third in the 200 fly (2:06.56) and Perry was third in the 100 back (59.60), nestled between teammates Elsa Litteken (second, 59.27) and Olivia Chatman (fourth, 59.68).

Another freshman, Liza Lunina, was part of the 200 free relay which placed second (1:36.97), joined by Friedrichs, Julia Box and Whitty as the anchor.

"Sometimes in their performances, the freshmen can wait for the older kids to take the lead, but I don't think that was the case," he said. "Every one of them were fighting for the best position they could get."

Box added a third-place finish in the 100 fly (57.24), and Abbey Owenby posted a pair of top finishes, taking second in the 500 free (5:12.88) and third in the 1,000 free (10:44.36).

The team is back in the water Oct. 19 when it travels to Air Force for a duals against the host Falcons and Northern Arizona, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
