Thomas Chaston and Lauren Offerman Place First
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State's Thomas Chaston on the men's side and Lauren Offerman on the women's side won their respective races Saturday in the UCCS Open at Monument Valley Park North in Colorado Springs.
In the Men's 8K that started the meet, 11 Rams raced in the field of 126 runners. Nine of which finished inside the top-50. Chaston, running in his hometown, took first place by over 15 seconds with a time of 24:41.6 seconds. Trailing him was Michael Mooney in second place at 24:56.4. Tom Oates and Preston Norris rounded out the top-25 with 16th and 21st finishes, respectively.
Following was the women's 5K with five CSU runners, including four that placed in the top-15 out of the field of 59 runners. Offerman, of Loveland, Colo., finished unattached with a time of 18:16 – three seconds in front of the next finisher. The other Chaston on the CSU roster, Emily Chaston, crossed in eighth place for the Rams at 18:42.1. On her heels was Stephanie Carrasco in ninth and Sydney Petersen in 14th to conclude the top-15 for CSU.
Assistant Coach Andrew Epperson
"Strong results from both teams. It's always special when you have an athlete win and we had both the men's and women's champions. The trio of Chaston, Mooney, and Oates got out well and pushed the men's race with redshirt-freshman Preston Norris moving up well late to clean up. On the women's side, Lauren [Offerman] and Sydney [Petersen] made their presence known early. Stephanie [Carrasco] ran a great race after missing last weekend and moved up well to finish strong in ninth with Emily [Chaston] just in front of her. The large contingent of freshman that drove down and raced was great to see. It shows the level of commitment isn't limited to the runners in uniform. Overall it was a great morning and the team took advantage!"
