Corwin wins three-setter to finish first round

LAS VEGAS – On the courts half of the day, they left tired and hungry but also upbeat from the final result.

Colorado State women's tennis team opened play in the ITA Mountain Regional on Wednesday at the Fatitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, winning a trio of singles matches and a pair at doubles.

Emma Corwin, playing in the second flight of singles, closed out the day with a three-set victory, giving the Rams a high note to exit the first round of play.

"She was the last one for us, and Stella Cliffe played really well, as did Alyssa Grijalva. Nastia Kotsyuba fought back and played three sets, and though she didn't win, she played well. Overall we competed. We started warmup at 7:30 in the morning, and Emma finished at 7:30 at night, so we put in a 12-hour work day. So yeah, it feels good to end on a win. It's long day."

The Rams pulled both Priscilla Palermo and Riley Reeves out of the singles draws, but both competed in doubles. There, the Rams showed the work they've put in after three weeks off from competition was going to pay dividends.

The teams of Emily Luetschwager and Cliffe; and Palermo and Grijalva both advanced with 8-4 victories, while Reeves and Corwin slipped to the consolation bracket with an 8-4 defeat.

"I like that they stuck to the tactics we've been talking about and really stayed with the game plan," Camerota said. "It was making first serves and making a lot of returns and being very active net players."

Cliffe and Grijalva both advanced in singles play in straight sets, with Luetschwager dropping her opener to seventh-seeded Monica Malinen of Colorado.

Play continues in the five-day event Thursday with two rounds of singles play in the main draw, one round in doubles in both the championship and consolation brackets.
