CSU trails by as many as 14 in the first half, but stout defense makes the difference
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Colorado State overcame a slow start and came back to earn a 74-64 victory at Loyola Marymount Saturday night at Gersten Pavilion. With their win, the Rams improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Lions fell to 1-2.
The Rams could not get the lid off the basket in the early going, trailing by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes as CSU hit just one of its first 14 shots. However, CSU battled back from there to cut the margin in half at the intermission to 35-28 LMU. The rally continued at the start of the second half as the Rams got up 40-35 just over six and half minutes in the final period and never trailed again. CSU eventually pulled out to as many as a nine-point lead until the closing minutes, using late free throw shooting to secure the 10-point win.
After making just one field goal in the first 12 minutes and ending the half at 29.2 percent from the floor, CSU rallied to shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the field while LMU connected on 48.2 percent (27-of-56) of their field goals. The big difference was the charity stripe, as the Rams were 24-of-32 (75 percent) to just 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) for the Lions. CSU won the battle boards 32-29.
CSU was led by freshman guard Isaiah Stevens with a game-high 21 points, five rebounds and five assists. Redshirt-senior center Nico Carvacho had 17 points, 15 of them coming in the second half, and seven rebounds, while redshirt-senior guard Kris Martin added 11 points and six rebounds. LMU was led by Eli Scott with 16 points, though just five came in the deciding period.
