Brady's Career Night Not Enough to Overcome Buffs

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Ask Annie Brady what it's like to beat Colorado as a member of the Colorado State women's basketball program.
Even with all her might, she was unable to lead the Rams to accomplishing the feat in Friday's 79-75 loss.
The loss stings. All the games on the schedule matter but winning the pride of the state carries added weight. While they didn't pull it out late against the Buffs, head coach Ryun Williams isn't swayed.
He'll simply tell you: "We're coming."
The entire game was a battle for the Rams. Every lead was subsequently answered from their rivals down the road. Their execution is still raw, something which will come with time and additional familiarity throughout a team so new.
Scoring nearly 80 points and sticking with the Buffs says only one thing to Williams. There's so much room for more.
"I like this basketball team. I really like my basketball team," Williams said. "Give CU credit, they made some timely 3's late. Those won't last, we're going to grow up because of this and this is a good team. I love how we fought."
With three minutes to go, the Rams held the lead. Behind Brady's career-high 26 points, the team which has fought so hard appeared carried an edge.
"I think we had a good game plan," Brady said. "It's a competitive game and we needed a win."
The Buffs went 5-for-5 from the field in the game's final stretch. They also made 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. A four-point margin was a perfect indicator of a game which wouldn't let any team pull away.
A game meaning this much isn't capable of blowouts.
"Every game, you want to come in and win," Ellis said. "But I think it's that state pride kind of thing. You're coming in and you want to own the state."
CU's Charlotte Whittaker scored 11 points after playing only 11 minutes per game in their first three. Quinessa Caylao-Do scored 22 of her own – one short of her career-high. Even Jaylyn Sherrod made her first 3-pointer of the year in the closing moments.
Everything which could go wrong for the Rams seemingly did. Many of them were things which wouldn't be repeated more than once if the two teams faced off 10 times.
There are no moral victories in sports, but this team is still looking up at a high ceiling.
"The chemistry is growing," Williams said. "We'll get healthier as we move on here, we'll get Lore Devos back eventually and just keep adding more bullets."
Next up for the Rams is a home bout against Incarnate Word. At 3-3, they've shown an equal number of positives and negatives. Turning the former into a consistent flow is the next step in their evolution.
"The losses have come to three good teams that have made some plays late," Williams said. "I think you can look at the little details of what it takes to win a basketball game and usually those get exposed at crunch time. We get better each game. But, you've got to do it better. We're not good enough, yet."

Colorado State will have a three-day break until playing Incarnate Word on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tip at Moby Arena.
