CSU holds a 16-board advantage while shooting better than 54 percent from the floor

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman – Colorado State played its most complete defensive game of the year in handling Washington State 79-69 in the consolation final of the Cayman Islands Classic Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Rams improved to 5-3 overall, while the Cougars slipped to 3-4.

The two teams exchanged numerous leads in the first half, with WSU going into the break with a slim one-point lead, 31-30. That continued in the early stages of the second half until the Rams took the lead for good on an Adam Thistlewood three-pointer with just under 16 minutes to go. CSU grew the lead to as many as 12, but saw the Cougars make a run to slice it to three with 8:33 to play. A triple by Kris Martin and a bucket by Isaiah Stevens pushed it back to eight, and WSU got no closer than six the rest of the way.

For the game, CSU shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field, including 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from the arc.
