Huge Second Half Lifts Rams Over Bears, 75-58

11/8/2019 9:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

GREELEY, Colo. – Coming out of the halftime tie, the Colorado State women's basketball team created separation en route to a 75-58 win against Northern Colorado Friday evening at Bank Of Colorado Arena.

The precursor to the second-half surge was ignited from redshirt-junior Jamie Bonnarens' three in the opening possession. A few minutes later, the guard drove, stopped on a dime and stroked a jumper to put the Rams up 36-31. The Bears didn't go away however, as the game was back knotted up at 39-all, but that would be the last tie as the Rams hit the accelerator. In the last five minutes, the Rams outscored the Bears 13-4 to create that cushion that would only balloon in the fourth.

Colorado State kept its record clean at 2-0, while handing Northern Colorado its second loss of the season in as many games. Bonnarens, in her first Ram start, poured in a team high 19 points, but equally lighting up the scoreboard was redshirt-junior Megan Jacobs with 18 of her own. On the boards, graduate forward Makenzie Ellis corralled a team best 10 rebounds, while redshirt-senior Andrea Brady contributed a healthy 11 points and seven rebounds to balance the Rams attack.

"In the second half, I really liked the poise, toughness and the playmaking that the kids showcased" head coach Ryun Williams said. "Once we slowed the game down in our mind, we were able to play our game. We loosened the game with some threes on the perimeter and then started winning one-on-ones down low. Annie [Brady] played with poise and we have to remember this was her first meaningful game in over a year and it's a road game where the crowd is not on your side. We played a little rattled in the first half, but man did we hit some tough shots in the second."

Picking up right where the Rams and she left off, Bonnarens hit a step-back jumper to start the Rams' fourth. Shortly after, Colorado State broke the game open with a 13-0 run – all from Bonnarens and Jacobs – that made the score 72-48. The two drained three shots consecutively from beyond the three-point arc, forcing the Bears to call a timeout with three minutes to play. At that point it was coast time for the Rams to lock up the win.

The Rams shot 47.7-percent from the field compared to 34.5 of the Bears, which was a turnaround from the first half in which the Rams trailed the Bears statistically 37.5 to 42.3, respectively. From three, CSU went 11-for-20, while UNC was 7-for-27. Defensively, the Rams forced 20 turnovers and manufactured 19 points off of them compared to eight and six the other way.

Colorado State is back in action Sunday at noon against Western Colorado at Moby Arena.

Turning Point
In the last five minutes of the third quarter…
The Rams went on an 8-2 run, including six straight to obtain their largest lead at that point of eight points.
-Megan Jacobs block and steal, outlet to Katia Stamatelopoulos who dished it down court to Andrea Brady for the bucket
-Liah Davis post, pump-fake and layup
-Megan Jacobs baseline drive, lean-in and off the glass
-Andrea Brady post-up hook

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Ryun Williams
On taking the challenged shots in the second half…
"The fact that they wanted to take them and shot it with great conviction as a coach that is what I love seeing. I think it went from 4-to-16 in just a few minutes, because of the shot making by those kids."

On the fans...
"Our fans that came out today were absolute outstanding. It was a fun game for our fans to drive a short distance and catch the away game. Any time you can win a rival game, especially on the road then you got to give your team credit."

Player's Perspective
Redshirt-junior Jamie Bonnarens
On the slow start…
"We told each other to settle down and do what we do. My teammates just said keep shooting, keep shooting and sure enough I started to get into a rhythm. We know how to talk to each other and get on the same page. We know how to motivate each other and build up confidence and that's what we did."
