CSU erases a five-point deficit in the final three minutes to earn the victory
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore Adam Thistlewood canned a deep three-pointer with just under 17 seconds to play and redshirt-senior Kris Martin sealed it with a late dunk as Colorado State rallied in the final minute for a 72-68 win over visiting South Dakota State Tuesday night. With the win, the Rams improved to 7-5 on the year, while the Jackrabbits fell to 6-6.
The game was back and forth throughout, with neither team leading by more than eight and a combined 25 ties and lead changes. SDSU held a 5-point lead with 3:14 to go at 66-61, but CSU charged with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes, taking the lead on sophomore Kendle Moore's driving layup with 1:14 to play. The Jackrabbits answered with a putback by Matt Dentlinger, setting up the dramatics.
A CSU turnover gave SDSU the ball back, but a three attempt rattled off the rim. Moore snatched the rebound and raced up the court, eventually dishing it back to Thistlewood for the game-winner from 25 feet out. The visitors had a jumper come up short and freshman Isaiah Stevens corralled the rebound, hit the outlet to Martin for the slam to get the Moby faithful on their feet.
For the game, CSU shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field while holding SDSU to just 43.3 percent (26-of-60). The Jackrabbits controlled the boards 37-28, but only had a 9-5 advantage on second chance points. CSU was plus-2 on the turnovers and made that a six-point difference, 17-11.
Martin and redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho led the Rams with 12 points each, as Carvacho added 12 rebounds for the double-double. Moore was the only other CSU player in double figures with 10, but all nine Rams that played scored and seven of them had at least seven points. South Dakota State was paced by Douglas Wilson with 15.
