Early Shooting Struggles Costly As Rams Fall To Colorado, 56-48

12/13/2019 9:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball

CSU has just five field goals in the first half before rallying late

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Too many shots that rolled off the rim and in and out of the basket were costly for Colorado State, as the hosts dropped the basketball version of the Rocky Mountain Showdown to #23 Colorado, 56-48, on Friday night in Moby Arena. With the loss, the Rams fell to 7-6 on the year, while the Buffs improved to 8-2 on the season.

The first half was one that CSU would soon like to forget, as the Rams were just 5-of-28 from the field, including missing all 10 of their three-point attempts. They finished with a half season-low 12 points and trailed 27-12 to the guests from Boulder. The Rams continued their stingy defense early in the second half, tying it at 39 with 7:17 to play. However a jumper by Shane Gatling put CU up for good with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Rams had a chance to take the lead at 4:55 but a short jumper rolled off the rim. CU scored the next five unanswered and the Rams could get no closer than three the rest of the way.

Colorado State finished at 29.0 percent (18-of-62) for the game despite going 13-of-34 in the second half. The Rams were also just 9.1 percent (2-of-22) from the three-point arc. CU finished at 37.8 percent (17-of-45) and won the battle of the boards 44-32.

For the Rams, freshman Isaiah Stevens was the only player in double figures with 10 points, while redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho had nine points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Adam Thistlewood and freshman David Roddy also added nine each. CU was led by Gatling with 20 points.
