Rams Drop Mountain West Opener To San Diego State Wednesday Night

A five-point game with seven minutes to play slipped away from the hosts
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State could not withstand a late run from San Diego State and fell to the visiting Aztecs 79-57 in the Mountain West opener for both teams Wednesday night. With the loss, the Rams dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the league, while the Aztecs remained undefeated at 9-0 and 1-0 in the conference.
After a six-point Aztec advantage at the break, the Rams came back to tie the game at 42 with 14:43 to play. San Diego State reeled off an 8-2 run to take a lead they would not let go. It was a five-point margin at 60-55 with 7:06 to play, but SDSU again put together a surge, this time nine unanswered and solidified the win, finishing with a 19-2 run over the last 6:37.
For the contest, CSU shot just 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor and 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from the arc, while SDSU was 49.2 percent (30-of-61) on field goal attempts and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) beyond the line. The Aztecs won the boards 40-27 and their bench outscored the Rams', 31-10.
CSU was led by redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Kendle Moore was the only other Ram in double figures with 14 points. San Diego State was led by Malachi Flynn with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

• San Diego State shot 15-of-36 (41.7 percent) in the 2nd half, while CSU was just 7-of-23 (30.4 percent)
NOTES
• SDSU now leads the overall series 44-41, including 40-38 in conference matchups, having won the last four meetings including three in Moby Arena
• CSU is 26-14 at home against the Aztecs overall
• The Rams are now 5-16 in Mountain West openers in its history (4-8 at home).
