BOSTON – Distance runner Eric Hamer put the final touch on Colorado State's opening indoor track season with a school-record finish in the 5,000 meters at the Boston University Season Opener Saturday afternoon.
The performance for Hamer, a senior from Monument, Colo., represented his debut for his competing year as the All-America exhausted eligibility last cross country season, but stayed tuned by training with them all fall.
Of the five sections ran at the distance, Hamer won the second group with a time of 13:40.11, besting the previous school record in a margin of 4.13 seconds set by Grant Fischer on February 9, 2018.
Prior to Saturday, Hamer's personal best in the 5,000m was 14:15.07 at the 2018 Husky Classic. Routinely, the Boston meet is known for putting individuals into the NCAA indoor meet and occupying the best talent in the country
"Eric put in a herculean performance tonight setting a school record," head distance coach Art Siemers said. "Instead of making excuses because he didn't get in the fast heat, he put the pedal down and lapped most of the field. That take next-level focus and confidence."
Hamer's performance Saturday capped an opening indoor weekend that included 10 total Ram individual titles, including the Hamer's second heat title.
