A New Leader But Familiar Face
• While he may be in his first season in charge of the program, head coach Niko Medved was already a familiar face around Fort Collins and to Rams' fans. Medved previously was on the coaching staff from 2007-13 under two different coaches. He was a key part of recruiting players that helped the Rams to four consecutive postseason appearances, the last two in the NCAA Tournament that included a win over Missouri in 2013.

Postseason Experience
• Head coach Niko Medved has had extensive success wherever he has coached, both as a head and an assistant.
• As an assistant coach, he helped turn around the CSU program to improving its win totals from his first year in each successive year, ending in four straight postseason appearances.
• He continued that trend at Furman and Drake, improving both programs' win totals from the previous year in each of his five seasons as a head coach, finishing his last three years in postseason play.

Basketball Staff
• Head coach Niko Medved brought four members of his staff from Drake with him. Dave Thorson, JR Blount and Ali Farokhmanesh were assistant coaches with Medved, while Aaron Katsuma joined him again as Director of Basketball Operations. Thorson has extensive experience as a high school coach and had previously worked with Medved at the University of Minnesota. Blount and Farokhmanesh also bring extensive recent playing experience with them as Blount played at Loyola Chicago, graduating in 2009, and Farokhmanesh was a key part of a Northern Iowa squad that knocked off No. 1 Kansas in the NCAA Tournament in his senior year in 2010.

Last Time Out...
• Colorado State's second half efforts fell short as the Rams lost 71-60 to San Diego State Tuesday night in Moby Arena.  CSU dropped to 9-16 on the season including a 4-8 record in Mountain West play, while the Aztecs improved to 15-9 and 7-4 in league action.
• Trailing by three at the break, Colorado State opened up the second stanza of play with a 15-5 run, keyed by redshirt-junior Nico Carvacho's menacing inside presence and a pair of threes by redshirt-senior J.D. Paige.  Redshirt-junior Anthony Masinton-Bonner closed off the run with a steal and score, giving the Rams their largest lead of the night at five, 41-36, with 15:05 to play.  Following the run, CSU couldn't buy a basket as the Aztecs went on a 17-1 run over the next 6:43 to take a 53-42 lead that would not get below six the rest of the way, while growing to as many as 15 in the final minutes.
• SDSU jumped out to a quick 16-6 lead in the game's opening eight minutes, but the Rams responded with a quick 13-4 run of their own over the following 2:47 behind three consecutive triples from freshman Adam Thistlewood to cut it to 20-19.  The Rams continued to battle into the break, with SDSU closing out the half with a slight 29-26 lead.
• Colorado State shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field but just 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from the three-point arc on the night. San Diego State hit 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the floor and an impressive 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from deep.  SDSU dominated the glass in the second half, 18-12, and finished with a 35-27 advantage for the night on the glass.
• Led by Carvacho's 20 points and 12 rebounds, the Rams had three players score in double figures as Paige added 16 and Thistlewood tallied 11.  San Diego State also had three players in double digits, paced by Devin Watson's 21.

Last Year's Meeting in San Jose
• Colorado State rallied from a 15-point deficit and escaped with a 59-52 victory at San Jose State, Dec. 30, 2017.
• Trailing by 11 at the break and by 14 after the opening possession of the second half, CSU kept the gap from growing during the first 11 minutes of the second half. Down 10 with just under nine to play, the Rams finally caught fire from the three-point arc, with three pointers on three straight possessions, with sophomore guard Lorenzo Jenkins kicking it off on a feed from junior guard Prentiss Nixon, followed by a Nixon triple from redshirt-sophomore guard Robbie Berwick and then Jenkins again to make it a one-point game. After a SJSU layup, CSU finally tied it on a Nixon triple and then took the lead for good on a pair of Berwick free throws with 5:31 to play, capping a 14-2 run over a 3:23 span. While the margin shrunk to one, CSU finished off the win with four made free throws in the final minute of play.
• San Jose State took the lead from the outset on a three by Noah Baumann and built the lead to as many as 15 in the opening half. CSU struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes, going just 6-of-27 from the field and 1-of-11 from the three-point line, including not hitting a field goal for the final 9:34 of the opening stanza. The Rams hung in the game by forcing nine Spartan turnovers, though the hosts still built their 11-point halftime lead by shooting 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the field in the first half.
• Colorado State finished the game at 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the field and 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from the three-point line. CSU was also 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the free throw line. San Jose State finished at 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field and 35.0 percent (7-of-20) behind the arc. The Spartans won the battle of the boards 37-29, but CSU held a slight advantage in second chance points, 9-3. The Rams also forced 23 Spartan turnovers and turned them into a 26-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
• Nixon led all scorers with 19 points while adding two assists and two steals. Redshirt-sophomore center Nico Carvacho was the other Ram in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. SJSU was led by Ryan Welage with 16 points, while Baumann chipped in 14

• CSU scored the first four points of the game and opened on a 12-5 run over the first four minutes of the contest. The Rams stretched the margin to a 10-point lead at 27-17 with 9:36, but the Spartans trimmed it down to two on two separate occasions in the opening 20 minutes. However, the hosts had an answer on all three occasions, led by 20 bench points, as the Rams connected on three pointers on the first two before scoring the final four points of the half to go into the break with a six-point lead, 46-40.
• San Jose State got it down to a one-point lead at 48-47 to start the half, but a quick 7-0 run pushed the advantage back to eight with 15:47 to play. The lead shrunk again to one in three more situations, with the final one at 60-59 with just under 11 minutes remaining. However, CSU went on an 11-0 run over a 1:07 span to take a 71-59 lead, one that eventually grew to as many as 17 in the closing minutes before getting the 11-point win.
• Colorado State was 50.7 percent (35-of-69) from the floor and 33.3 percent (11-of-33) from the three-point line. San Jose State finished at 42.9 percent (27-of-63) on field goal attempts and 36.0 percent (9-of-25) on threes, though the visitors were limited to just 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from the field in the second half. Sharing the Load
• Through 25 games, eight different Rams have either led or tied for the team-high points in a game.
• Six different Rams -- redshirt-senior J.D. Paige (8), redshirt-juniors Anthony Masinton-Bonner (4), Nico Carvacho (8) and Kris Martin (3) and freshmen Kendle Moore (3) and Adam Thistlewood (2) -- have each led multiple times.
• The Rams shared the ball well early in MW play, recording a combined 51 assists in the two games against Air Force and New Mexico, Jan. 8 and 12, respectively. The two games (26 and 25) are among the top-10 totals in school history and marked the first time since 1993-94 that there were two games in a single season with at least 25 assists.

Carvacho Growing On the Floor
• Redshirt-junior center Nico Carvacho showed his increased comfort level on the floor, growing extensively the last two seasons.
• In the 2017-18 season, Carvacho was the leader on the glass for CSU with 331 boards (125 offensive) in 32 games (the only Ram to start all 32 last year). His 10.3 boards per game average ranked second in the Mountain West, as he had double-digit boards in the last 16 games (averaging 13.6 per game in that span). He also just had the sixth-ever individual 300-rebound season in CSU history, surpassing the mark at Nevada, Feb. 25.
• Last year, he averaged 11.1 points and 12.3 rebounds in Mountain West play, leading by a wide margin in rebounding for league games only (next was 9.6 per game).
• He had double-doubles in 10 of the last 16 games he played in 2017-18 and had a higher rebound average in MW league contests than Emmanuel Omogbo had in 2016-17 (10.9).
• Carvacho posted a career-high 26 points and tied a then-career best with 20 rebounds in the win over San Jose State, Feb. 10, 2018. The last Ram to have a 20-point/20-rebound game prior to that one was current Washington Wizards' Jason Smith, with 27 & 22 in a win over Wyoming on Feb. 24, 2007.
• He finished the season in fifth with 331 boards, surpassing former standout and current Washington Wizard Jason Smith in sixth.
• For his play in '17-18, Carvacho was named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West by both the league's coaches and media members in two separate votes.
• This season, Carvacho has been effective, recording double-doubles in 17 games and is currently averaging a team-high 15.9 points and a nation-leading 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting a league-best 59.6 percent from the floor (27th in NCAA).
• He has led CSU in rebounding in 24 of 25 games including the last 21 straight.
• He recorded his second 20-20 game of his career when he finished with 23 points and a career-high 22 rebounds at Long Beach State, Dec. 22. The 22 rebounds are tied for the sixth-best single-game performance in CSU history.
• Carvacho's 23-point/22-rebound game was the second of his career, matching Smith as the only Rams with multiple 20/20 games in their career.
• At UNLV Jan. 2, Carvacho set a new career best with 28 points and added 20 rebounds for his second 20-20 game of the year and school-record third of his career.
• For his play in wins against Air Force and New Mexico, Carvacho was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Jan. 14, the first of his career.
• Carvacho started the season No. 20 on the CSU career rebounding chart. With his 12 rebounds against San Diego State Feb. 12, he became the all-time leading rebounder at CSU with 861, passing previous leader Pat Durham (1985-89) in view at 851.
• Carvacho also is second in CSU offensive rebounds with 316 and is fourth in CSU career defensive rebounds with 545 (since tracking of the two categories began).
• He is tied for third in league history with 20 career double-doubles in Mountain West games, while his 30 career double-doubles are tied for sixth in the league's history.
