CSU rallies late, going 8-under over final seven holes
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Colorado State had a rally late in the final round to tie for fifth at the 2019 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-24. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming, was played at Classic Club (Par 72 – 7,305 yards) in Palm Desert, Calif.
Playing in the final wave of the day off No. 1 with the top four teams, the No. 47 Rams got off to a solid start, had some issues in the middle of the round but rallied late to finish at 1-over 289 for the day and a three-round total of 13-over 877, tied with UT-Arlington for fifth. The four counting scores closed the final six holes in a combined 8-under for a strong finish. No. 18 Texas Tech held on to its second-round lead with a 2-under 286 today to finish at 6-under 858, one shot ahead of runner up Boise State at 5-under 859. No. 39 Kansas was third at 2-over 866 followed by TCU in fourth at 3-over 867 and then the Rams and the Mavericks.
We had a great start today and played the first six holes great," head coach Christian Newton said. "We stumbled in the middle of the round and were 9-over at one point. We battled back great to finish 1-over for the day. I'm very proud of their fight."
The Rams were led by freshman Davis Bryant, who put together a brilliant 6-under 66 in the final round to move up 49 spots to a tie for 13th at 2-over 218. Bryant had an eagle, four birdies and no bogeys on the day to post his personal season-low round, both in score and under par. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri was next in a tie for 20th at 4-over 220, followed by senior Jake Staiano, who tied for 37th with a 6-over 222. Junior AJ Ott tied for 41st at 7-over 223, with freshman Oscar Teiffel the final member of the lineup in a tie for 52nd at 9-over 225.
