CSU battled and trailed by just seven at the final media timeout
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State's second half efforts fell just short as CSU dropped a 98-82 decision to No. 6 Nevada Wednesday night in Moby Arena. The Rams dropped to 9-14 overall and 4-6 in Mountain West competition, while the Wolf Pack improved to 22-1 including a 9-1 record in league play.
Coming out of the halftime break trailing by 11, Colorado State's comeback attempt was started off by a monstrous dunk in transition by redshirt-senior J.D. Paige. The Rams followed it up with timely three-point shooting by freshman Adam Thistlewood and impressive inside work by redshirt-junior Nico Carvacho. The Rams efforts led to a 21-14 run, bringing the game within three, 67-64, with 12:49 remaining. The Wolf Pack would keep the Rams at bay over the next eight minutes but were not able to pull away as CSU trailed by seven at the final media timeout. Nevada converted free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.
CSU kept it close at the start of the contest, matching the Wolf Pack's 11 points through the first five minutes of play before a 25-9 Wolf Pack run gave the visitors a 36-20 lead. The Rams continued to battle, closing out the final 2:44 with a 10-5 run of their own to enter the break trailing 52-41.
The Rams connected on 56.9 percent (33-of-58) shooting from the field including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the deep. Nevada held a slight advantage on the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Rams 34-31, turning that into a 22-12 advantage on second-chance points.
Led by Carvacho's impressive 24 points, game-high 17 rebounds and three blocks, the Rams had four players reach double figures, as Paige added 13, while Thistlewood and redshirt-junior Anthony Masinton-Bonner totaled 10 each. Nevada redshirt-senior Jordan Caroline led all players in scoring with 40.
STAT OF THE GAME
• The game was decided at the charity stripe, as Nevada went to the line 35 times, making 28 of them (80.0 percent), while CSU had just 16 attempts, converting 11 (68.8 percent).

On the game overall
• "Unfortunately, (we're) obviously disappointed in the result. I don't think the final score is indicative of the ball game it was tonight. A lot of things go through my head. The thing I told the guys after the game was, Don't let anybody tell you great job, you played a really good team close. There are no moral victories here and that's a terrific team but I thought we had some opportunities there tonight and we just couldn't do enough defensively. They've got some great player. You look at (Nevada guard/forward) Jordan Caroline, when he's making shots like that from the perimeter, we don't have a matchup. I think that sometimes that's when you really have to stay with the plan even more and I think a lot of things we practiced for two days that didn't show up defensively. You just can't make mistakes and you can't give up easy baskets. You have to get back in transition and help each other more. You have to come up with rebounds because if you don't do that against this team, you've got no chance. I know they only shot 40% in the second half, but we couldn't rebound the ball but we had it right there a couple of times and just couldn't find a way to string together stops because clearly we were able to get what we wanted offensively."
On the fan support
"I want to make a point to thank all the students. I thought the students were terrific tonight. This was the first time I saw the students out. Great turnout. They were into the game. Those are the people--all of our fans do--but it's great to see students out in Moby tonight. You don't think they make a difference, but they do make a difference. So that was really fun and hopefully that's the start of something new moving forward because I think we are getting better and will continue to get better."
