LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Utah State Aggies, 62-59, in the first round of the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Colorado State (8-22) shot 50 percent for the game, its top shooting performance against a Division I opponent and its second-best overall this season. Sophomore guard Lore Devos led all scorers with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Senior forward Tatum Neubert scored 13 points to join Devos in double-figure scoring. Also scoring in the double digits for Colorado State (8-22) were sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu (12 points, nine assists) and junior guard Mollie Mounsey (11 points). Olivia West led Utah State (16-14) with 13 points.
A combination of 30 percent shooting and five turnovers put Colorado State behind, 17-9, after the first quarter. That lead remained until the third quarter, a period CSU finished shooting 50 percent. That shooting effort in the third quarter, paired with 18.8 field goal percentage defense, pulled the Rams ahead, 38-37, heading to the fourth.
Colorado State went on a scoring drought over the first 3:12 of the fourth quarter and Utah State capitalized, building its lead back to 10 at 48-38. However, CSU's fourth quarter was its best shooting stretch of the night, as the Rams converted on 67 percent (8-for-12) of their shots over the final 10 minutes. That helped the Rams cut the deficit in half at 53-48 with just under five minutes to go, and then to 56-55 with 30 seconds on the clock.
Four Utah State free throws made it a 60-55 Aggie edge, but the Rams responded once again with a Colaivalu free throw and a Mounsey three to cut it to 60-59 with 11 seconds to go. Forced to foul, the Rams sent the Aggies back to the line, where USU's Olivia West made both to set the score at 62-59. The Rams had the final possession, but were unable get a shot off and the score went final.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I thought our kids were exceptional in their fight tonight. I thought we guarded really good. They just made a few more winning plays than we did. But our second half was, it was strong. It was competitive. It was a winning half. And we put ourselves in a position to win the basketball game. And I'm proud of our kids for that."
Senior forward Tatum Neubert
On her takeaways from the season:
"(Mollie Mounsey and I) were just talking about this. If we were going to go out anyway this is the way we wanted to go out. We gave everything we had. And in my final season, I think (it's) the spirit that we brought every single practice even though we were losing. We were coming into practice every day, working just as hard, coming into every game we were working just as hard. And every practice, everyone had a smile on their face…we were ready for the next day every time. I can't ask for a better team for my last season."
