CSU puts together two of its best rounds of the year against a nationally-renowned field
TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State put together two solid under-par rounds and is sixth after 36 holes of the 2019 National Invitational Tournament Monday. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Arizona is being played at Omni Tucson National Resort Catalina Course (par 72 – 7,200 yards), the site of the 2019 Mountain West Championship.
Playing in a field of 16 teams in which 12 were represented in NCAA postseason competition last year, the No. 52 Rams fired an 8-under 280 in the morning round and followed it up with a 7-under 281 in the afternoon to post a 15-under 561 for the day. The rounds are the second and third best for CSU this year, both in terms of total and relative to par. No. 4 Arizona State is the two-round leader at 33-under 543, including an astounding 25-under 263 in the second round. No. 7 Southern Cal is second at 27-under 549, with No. 5 Oklahoma in third at 20-under 556. No. 32 UNLV is fourth at 19-under 557, with New Mexico rounding out the top five teams at 18-under 558. Just six shots separates third from eighth entering the final 18 holes tomorrow.
"Overall a good effort by the team today," head coach Christian Newton said. "We made some nice putts and were consistently in the top five all day. We will need to continue to make birdies as the field is strong and conditions are optimal for scoring."
With three players in the top 20, CSU is led by freshman Oscar Teiffel, who is ninth at 7-under 137, including a career-best 6-under 66 on his second 18. The 6-under 66 tied the low round of the year for the Rams in terms of under par, as it was Teiffel's fifth sub-70 round of the year. Senior Jake Staiano is next in a tie for 15th at 4-under 140, having fired a team-best 5-under 67 in the first round, tied for the third-best under-par round of the year. Freshman Davis Bryant is next in a tie for 20th at 3-under 141 with a pair of under-par rounds. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri is currently tied for 37th at 1-under 143, with junior AJ Ott the final Ram in a tie for 46th at 1-over 145. No. 3 Justin Suh of Southern California is the 36-hole leader at 14-under 130, two shots better than No. 44 Trevor Werbylo of Arizona at 1-under 132.
Colorado State will again go off holes 4-6 at 8 a.m. PT, playing with New Mexico, Iowa State and Arizona in the final round.
