Rams move up to place fourth at National Invitational Tournament

Three CSU players finish in top 15 to lead squad to a strong finish in the nationally-renowned event
TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State tied for the second-best final round and moved up two spots to finish fourth at the 2019 National Invitational Tournament March 18-19. The two-day, 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Arizona, was played at Omni Tucson National Resort Catalina Course (par 72 – 7,200 yards), the site of the 2019 Mountain West Championship.
Playing in a field of 16 teams in which 12 were represented in NCAA postseason competition last year, the No. 52 Rams shot their best round of the tournament with a 10-under 278 to move up to fourth at 25-under 839. No. 4 Arizona State held its lead through 36 holes with a 17-under 271 in the final round to finish at 50-under 814, 21 shots ahead of No. 7 Southern Cal in second at 29-under 835. No. 5 Oklahoma placed third, just three shots ahead of CSU at 28-under 836. No. 42 Iowa State rounded out the top five teams at 24-under 840.
All five Rams finished under par for the tournament, led by the trio of sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri, senior Jake Staiano and freshman Oscar Teiffel in a tie for 13th at 6-under 210. Suyasri had the best round of the day for CSU with a 5-under 67, including seven birdies and an eagle on the eighth hole, his fifth hole of the day in the shotgun start. Junior AJ Ott fired a 4-under 68 on the day with six birdies and two bogeys en route to a tie for 26th at 3-under 213. Freshman Davis Bryant also finished at 1-under 215 for the tournament, tying for 37th.
Concurrently, Arizona hosted the Sonoroan Showdown on Omni's Sonoran Course (par 70 – 6,552 yards), an all-individual event. Sophomore Jack Ainscough finished fourth in the 21-player field at 7-under 203, while sophomore Cullen Plousha was 11th at 5-over 215.

"I can't say enough of how well we responded to a tough event last week. The boys came out and made the second-most birdies, 69, of any team all week. I'm very happy with the result and quality wins we took home."
NOTES
• CSU posted wins over three teams ranked ahead of them in the Golfstat rankings, including defeating four Mountain West schools (New Mexico, No. 32 UNLV, San Diego State and Wyoming).
• The Rams also beat in-state rival Colorado by 41 shots to finish 3-2 against the Buffaloes with a cumulative shot advantage.
• The Rams 25-under par total is the 10th lowest 54-hole total in school history and the third lowest under sixth-year head coach Christian Newton
• The 10-under in the final round is the second lowest under-par round for CSU this year and the 278 is also second for the season team round total.
• Each of the three rounds in the tournament rank in the top five rounds this year for CSU, both in terms of under par and total score.
• Suyasri's 67 is his second lowest of the year, while the 6-under was a new season best, as he recorded his third top-20 finish of the spring and fourth of the year.
• Bryant now has a team-high six top-20 finishes on the year, while Staiano picked up his third in the tournament.
• Since joining the team lineup, Teiffel has recorded a victory and three combined top-15 finishes in five tournaments.

Colorado State will have almost a month off the course before returning to action at the 2019 Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf Monday-Wednesday, April 15-17. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by San Jose State University, will be played at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. The tournament will be the first NCAA men's golf regular season event ever televised by Golf Channel, with coverage on Monday and Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. MT and Wednesday's final round on from 1-4 p.m. MT.
