Rams post three of CSU’s all-time top-10 performances in throws, as well as one in each of the sprints and jumps
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State posted performances in the throws, sprints and jumps among its respective all-time top-10 lists as the Rams wrapped up action at the Fum McGraw Open on Saturday at Jack Christiansen Track.
Among those performances was senior Shadae Lawrence's debut in a Colorado State uniform. The native of Jamaica won the women's discus with a best effort of 186-3 (56.78m), the No. 5 mark on the all-time Mountain West list and CSU's all-time outdoor list. Rams placed in each of the top five spots in that event on Saturday, as Lawrence was followed by Kelcey Bedard (170-3/51.90m) in second-place, along with Gabi McDonald (unattached – 154-1/46.96m), Maria Muzzio (151-11/46.30m) and Tarynn Sieg (150-6/45.87m).
Sieg also took first place in the women's shot put, topping the field with a mark of 51-7.25 (15.73m), which is sixth on CSU's all-time outdoor list. On the men's side, redshirt-freshman Jackson Morris won the men's javelin by over 40 feet with his throw of 223-3 (68.05m) on his fifth attempt. Morris missed the school record by eight inches (223-11 by Mattias Borman in 1994) and moves up to No. 2 on CSU's all-time outdoor list with his performance. Redshirt-freshman Adam Dawson won the discus throw with a mark of 175-2 (53.40m), which ranks 19th all-time at CSU.
Sophomore Jessica Ozoude won the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.65, topping the field by half of a second. In preliminaries, Ozoude clocked a time of 11.61, the third-best on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Sophomore Destinee Rocker won the hurdles at the same distance with a time of 13.81. On the men's side, Kamal-Craig Golaube won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.43, the No. 13 time on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Notably, Germain Barnes' time of 14.61 ranks 19th all-time at CSU. Barnes finished third in that event, and won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.13.
Nia Powdrell placed third in a deep women's long jump group, clearing 19-2.5 (5.85m). With her performance, she moves up to seventh on CSU's all-time outdoor list. On the men's side, sophomore Isa Bynum leapt 23-8 (7.21m) to win the long jump and rank as CSU's all-time No. 17 performer in the event. Bynum was also second in the triple jump (47-11.25/14.61m). In the high jump, Antwan Ross-Jones cleared 6-8 (2.03m) - the 16th-best mark on CSU's all-time outdoor list - to place second based upon number of misses.
Rounding out top field events was the women's pole vault, which included Gabby Smith and Josie Spitz among four women that cleared 12-2 (3.71m). Spitz tied for first based upon number of misses, while Smith was fourth by the same criteria. Maddie Wilson topped 11-8 (3.56m) in her first outdoor collegiate pole vault, moving up to 14th on CSU's all-time outdoor list. On the track, Macy Kreutz won the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.42, while Roxy Trotter placed second with a time of 2:13.12.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
On CSU's first meet at Jack Christiansen Track since its upgrades:
"There's a few glitches we've got to get worked out, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how it all came together. The facility does allow us a lot of options – we can have multiple jumps and throws going at once, for instance. The surface is good, and it was good to see some good performances despite the 40-degree weather. We heard good comments from coaches that appreciated the facility and a chance to compete, so we were happy to host meets this weekend."
On CSU's throwers:
"The throws crew did a nice job and have been training well, so it's not a huge surprise for most of them. It was good to see our redshirt freshmen that finally have a uniform on come out and do some good things to get the outdoor season started. They're certainly talented, so that's kind of the expectation for them."
NOTES
The Colorado State track & field team returns to action next week at the Stanford Invitational and the Tom Benich Invitational. The former is held on Friday and Saturday in Stanford, Calif., while the latter is contested on Saturday in Greeley, Colo.
