Shadae Lawrence registers NCAA’s No. 3 discus mark and third-best mark in CSU, Mountain West history

GREELEY, Colo. – Colorado State senior Shadae Lawrence led a dominant performance by the Rams in the discus on Sunday with one of the top marks in conference and program history at the Tom Benich Invitational at Nottingham Field.

Lawrence posted her best effort of the day on her first attempt, a heave of 195-2 (59.50m). The senior's mark ranks third in the NCAA this outdoor season, and is third on CSU's all-time outdoor list and on the Mountain West's all-time list. Lawrence led a one-through-five sweep of the event, as senior Kelcey Bedard (171-1/52.16m) placed second, freshman Gabi McDonald (162-4/49.49m) took third unattached, junior Maria Muzzio (155-8/47.45m) finished fourth and redshirt-freshman Tarynn Sieg (154-7/47.12m) was fifth.

Colorado State also recorded a sweep of the top three spots in the men's discus. Redshirt-freshman Adam Dawson paced the field with a mark of 178-1 (54.29m), while redshirt-freshman Jackson Morris (164-6/50.13m) took second and junior Bailey King (164-0/49.98m) placed third. Dawson's mark ranks 13th on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Morris added a victory in the men's javelin, besting the field by 37 feet with a mark of 213-3 (65.01m).

Muzzio accounted for the Rams' final throws victory of the day on the women's side with a first-place finish in the women's shot put (48-0.75/14.65m). Rounding out top throws performances were second-place finishes in each of the women's and men's hammer throw. Bedard threw the hammer 200-11 (61.25m) to finish runner-up on the women's side, while King finished second with a heave of 190-6 (59.07m).

In the jumps, Colorado State finished with two of the top five finishers in a deep women's long jump field. Junior Aria Tate finished fourth in the event with a mark of 18-9.25 (5.72m), the No. 14 mark on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Junior Amelia Harvey leapt 18-9 (5.71m) to place fifth on Sunday.

Capping off top performers by CSU's women in field events was junior Josie Spitz, who attempted 13-1/75 (4.01m) but ultimately won the women's pole vault after clearing 12-4 (3.76m). On the men's side, Antwan Ross-Jones placed second in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-8.75 (2.05m). That mark ranks 12th on CSU's all-time outdoor list.

On the track, Tate won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40. In distance events, the Rams took the top spots in each of Sunday's 1,500 meters races. Emma Atwell topped the women's field with a time of 4:41.14, while Michael Mooney, who ran unattached, clocked a time of 3:56.22 to win the men's 1,500.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
"One of the reasons we have Shadae (Lawrence) competing early and often is that we're trying to build some familiarity in competitive environments...she's getting to know me as a coach and I'm getting to know her as a competitor. We're trying to work through some technical changes, so we're using a lot of these early meets as practice for some of the things we're trying to work on, as well. I like the fact that we hit a pretty big throw today and we're working on consistency, but it's early and we can still get those things worked out. I was really happy with our performances across the board, especially those by our freshmen. The present and future looks good for our throws crew."

NOTES
  • While Jackson Morris' mark in the javelin was shy of a personal best, only four other athletes in program history have registered a better mark than his from Sunday.
  • Kelcey Bedard has topped 200 feet in the women's hammer in both of the Rams' meets this season. She is one of four athletes in program history to throw 200 feet or better in that event.
