LOGAN, Utah – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Utah State Aggies, 70-59, in a Monday night Mountain West contest at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Â
Colorado State (8-20, 2-15 MW) was led offensively sophomore guard Lore Devos, who tallied 18 points and a team-high six rebounds. Senior forward Tatum Neubert scored nine points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting, while junior guard Mollie Mounsey registered seven points and a season-best seven assists with no turnovers. Utah State's (15-14, 10-8 MW) Shannon Dufficy scored 29 points and corralled 14 rebounds, both game highs.
Â
The trend for the first three quarters of the game was a series of sustained runs for each squad, beginning with a 12-5 start for Utah State in the first quarter. Colorado State responded with 5-for-7 three-point shooting in the first quarter to power a 16-2 run and a 21-14 advantage after one. CSU continued its early hot streak to open the second quarter, knocking down two more triples within the next four minutes to extend its lead to 29-17. The game's decisive run came immediately after, as Utah State closed the first half on a 17-2 run to erase Colorado State's double-digit advantage and take a 34-31 lead at the break.
Â
Colorado State shot 48 percent from the floor  in the first half and 64 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Utah State was held to 39 percent and 25 percent shooting in those respective categories, but compensated by producing 12 points off of seven Ram turnovers. CSU limited its turnovers to four in the second half, but was unable to recapture its hot hand on the offensive end. Despite a lower-scoring second half, CSU still finished the game shooting 45 percent from the floor and from three.
Â
USU extended the aforementioned run from 17-2 to 22-2 in the third to build its lead to 39-31, and remained ahead 43-38 at the 5:44 mark. However, CSU did not score for the rest of the third quarter, allowing the Aggies a 10-0 run and a 53-38 lead heading to the fourth. The Rams bounced back for a 21-point fourth quarter, but were unable to cut the deficit to any smaller than 10 before the final 70-59 result.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I was really happy with how the team responded to the 12-5 run created by our turnovers (in the first quarter). I thought we played some of our best basketball we've played in a long time. The ball just went in. We had some on drives, we made some threes - that was positive stuff. We got tired … we had this game right where we needed to have it. We probably needed to play with more composure there in that second quarter. We just had a really tough stretch, and it was everybody. They (Utah State) really amped up their heat and we did not handle that very well."
