Four all-time top 10 marks highlight Doug Max Invitational
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Colorado State's all-time record in the outdoor women's 4x100 relay was smashed for the second week in a row Sunday at the Doug Max Invitational to headline a slew of blazing times on the new Jack Christiansen Track. The winning time of 44.06 by Marybeth Sant, Lauren Gale, Destinee Rocker and Jessica Ozoude was sixth-tenths of a second faster than the 44.66 run by that quartet last week at the Colorado Invitational.
Last week's women's 4x100 performance by Sant, Gale, Rocker and Ozoude, of 44.66, topped the previous record of 44.79.
The Doug Max Invitational presented by Ed Carroll VW Porsche Audi Fort Collins featured the Rams competing with athletes from Air Force, Colorado and Wyoming.
Sant, Ozoude and Rocker also made an impact on the Rams' all-time outdoor list in individual events.
Nathan Gish logged the ninth-best men's 200-meter outdoor time at CSU to win in 21.25, topping his previous best of 21.5 at last year's Mountain West Championships, while Emma Atwell's winning time of 11:29.72 in a victorious women's 3,000-meter steeplechase was 15th-best on CSU's all-time list.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
On the school-record women's 4x100 relay:
"The 4x100 was definitely a highlight for us today. It's fun to see that group get together and do some special things. What's exciting is that not all the handoffs were perfect—we had one that could be a lot better, so they're just going to get faster and faster as the season goes on. There were some good performances across the board, and that's always fun to see."
On the significance of the Doug Max Invitational:
"It was a great day to have a meet. We had to move it off Saturday, and I think that was the right decision because we had beautiful weather today to celebrate (Sr. Assoc. AD) Doug Max and his influence on our program. It was fun to have him out here and acknowledge him. He recruited me out of high school (when he was head coach), I was an athlete under him and then a young assistant coach. He took a chance on me and provided a young guy fresh out of college with an opportunity to become a coach. He's continued to mentor me through the years, both working for him as a head coach, and even now to this day I still call him with things, so I think it was important for the impact he's had on our program and athletic department to acknowledge him and lift him up."
