Senior clocks 13:35.26; Bedard wins hammer throw at Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
AZUSA, Calif.—Senior standout Cole Rockhold broke Colorado State's school record in the 5,000 meters Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Rockhold's time of 13:35.26 topped the previous record of 13:37.23 set two years ago by Jefferson Abbey, and was five seconds faster than his personal best of 13:40.29, which had ranked second in school history.
Rockhold's record-setting performance landed him in second place among collegians and fourth overall in a highly-competitive Heat 1 in which the top seven finishers crossed in a span of 2.5 seconds. Rockhold and Alabama's Gilbert Kigen (13:34.95) clocked the top two collegiate times of 2019. In Heat 2 senior Carson Hume and junior Eric Hamer also set personal bests with all-time CSU outdoor top 10 performances. Hume's 13:58.94 ranks 7th in CSU history while Hamer's 13:59.07 ranks 8th.
Junior Ali Kallner finished fourth among collegians and sixth overall in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:19.07, just a few seconds off her personal best of 10:14.13 set just three weeks ago. Junior Emma Atwell followed in 11:03.61, 10th-best all-time at CSU, to finish 46th. Senior Bailey Ness clocked a 16:54.30 in Heat 2 of the 5,000 meters to enter CSU's all-time outdoor top 20 at No. 20.
The Bryan Clay Invitational Multi events wrapped up Thursday. Sophomore Aria Tate won Group 2 with a score of 4,952, while junior Amelia Harvey placed third in that group with a score of 4,920, which rank 12th and 13th on CSU's all-time heptathlon list. Freshman Lexie Keller posted the top score among competitors in Group 1 with 4,758 points, which also climbs into the program's all-time top 20 at 19th.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head cross country coach/track & field distance coach Art Siemers:
On Rockhold's school-record 5,000 meters:
"This was not an easy road for Cole (Rockhold). His stress fracture in cross country took longer to heal than we thought, which cut his indoor season short. Then he had another minor setback at the beginning of outdoor, which forced him to miss a few key workouts. Like a true champion he never seemed to lose his confidence. Cole put together three of his best training weeks in a row after (the) Stanford (Invitational). He executed wonderfully tonight and showed he's back to his All-America form."
