Rams shoot 13-under on the day and take a two-shot lead into tomorrow's final round
TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State improved on its opening day effort and has taken sole possession of the lead after the second round of the 2019 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship Saturday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the Mountain West, will be played at OMNI Tucson National Resort's Catalina Course (Par 72 - 7,194 yards) in Tucson, Ariz., with the winner getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Playing in the final pairings with New Mexico and Boise State, CSU had all five Rams shooting par or better, with the four counters all in the 60s to combine for a 13-under 275 and a 36-hole total of 22-under 554. Defending champion UNLV moved up three spots with its 14-under 274 round, the best of the day, and is now in second at 20-under 556. New Mexico is one shot behind the Rebels at 19-under 557, with San Diego State at 15-under 561 and Fresno State at 13-under 563 rounding out the top-five teams. In all, nine of the 11 teams are under par through the first two rounds, with those nine all having gone under-par in the second 18 holes.
"That was another very solid round by the boys," head coach Christian Newton said. "Our par-5 play was the key to such a low round and we did a great job in playing the hardest hole on the course, the 18th, in 1-under. We can't wait to get back out and compete tomorrow."
CSU is led by junior AJ Ott, as he shot a 3-under 69 for the second straight day and is tied for fifth at 6-under 138. Ott had six birdies on the day. Senior Jake Staiano and freshman Oscar Teiffel are tied for eighth at 5-under 139. Staiano shot a team-best 4-under 68 on the day with five birdies to one bogey, while Teiffel had five birdies to two bogeys. Freshman Davis Bryant shot a 3-under 69 as well, making six birdies to three bogeys and moved up into a tie for 30th overall. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri shot an even-par 72 on the day, which included an eagle on the par-5 10th, and is tied for 18th at 3-under 141. Sean Carlon of New Mexico is the two-round leader at 9-under 135, one shot ahead of teammate Galven Green. In all, 29 of the 55 golfers in the field are under par through 36 holes.
The Rams will go off in the final wave for the last round, starting at 9:40 a.m. MT and playing with UNLV and New Mexico. Live stats are available at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=17981.
