CSU jumps six spots to fifth after shooting the second-best round of the day

PULLMAN, Wash. – Colorado State got off to a stellar start, held on in the late wind and moved up six spots to sit in fifth after the second round of the 2019 NCAA Pullman Regional Tuesday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Washington State University, is being played at Palouse Ridge Golf Club (Par 70 – 7,232 yards) in Pullman, Wash.

Starting in the final wave off No. 10, the Rams got it going early in the day, jumping out with two eagles as part of a scoring barrage that put CSU at 15-under for the day among the counters at the turn and 16-under overall. Moving to the front side for the final nine where the wind kicked up at the hilly course, Colorado State battled through it to finish at 11-under for the day. The Rams now sit at 12-under for the tournament in fifth, three shots ahead of No. 29 UCLA and four shots clear of No. 17 South Carolina for the final advancing spot to the NCAA Championship.

No. 20 Texas A&M is the second-round leader at 23-under 537, three shots ahead of No. 5 Oklahoma in second at 20-under 540. No. 8 Georgia Tech is third at 19-under 541, followed by No. 32 BYU at 17-under 543 and CSU. There are just nine shots separating fifth from 12th heading into the last 18 holes tomorrow.

The Rams were led today by senior Jake Staiano, who shot a sizzling 6-under 64 and moved up 28 places into a tie for ninth at 6-under 134. Staiano's round had an eagle, five birdies and just one bogey en route to the 6-under total. Junior AJ Ott also was solid, finishing at 4-under 66 to move up to a tie for 17th at 4-under 136. Ott played his first nine holes of the day in 6-under 29, which included an eagle and four birdies. Freshman Oscar Teiffel shot a 1-under 69 and is in a tie for 35th with fellow freshman Davis Bryant at even-par 140, as Bryant contributed another even-par 70 to the team total. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri is the final Ram in a tie for 49th at 2-over 142.

Oklahoma's Blaine Hale is the 36-hole leader at 10-under 130 following an 8-under 62 in the second round. A trio of golfers are two shots back, including BYU's Rhett Rasmussen after a 7-under 63, as 39 of the 75 players are at even par or better after two rounds.
