Tate stands third in heptathlon
CLOVIS, Calif. – Hunter Powell and Nick Kravec both won events during in the decathlon on the opening day of the 2019 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium, putting the Colorado State competitors atop the leaderboard at the halfway point.
The heptathlon hit the midpoint with Colorado State's Aria Tate sitting third with 3,330 points.
"Powell and Kravec are doing their jobs and are big second day competitors," CSU assistant coach Ryan Baily said of the seniors. "I'm excited for tomorrow."
Powell, who entered the meet with the best score in the conference this season, won the 100 meters (10.97) and took second in both the shot put (44-6.75) and the 400 (48.81) to sit in first with 3,713 points.
Kravec took top honors in the high jump (6-6.25) and finished no lower than fifth in any competition to sit second with 3,653 points. The Rams have four entrees in the seven-member field, with Bradly Wright in sixth (3,343) and Eric Lundgren seventh (2,979). Lundgren won the shot put (49-1) but did not score in the long jump.
Tate came out hot on Wednesday by taking the first two events, winning the 100 hurdles (14.06) outright and tying for the top spot in the high jump (5-7.75), which Baily said did wonders to boost her confidence. CSU's Amelia Harvey sits in fifth (3,124) and Lexie Keller is 11th (2,150). Harvey's best finish came in the final event when she took second in the 200 in a time of 24.65, one spot in front of Tate.
"Aria and Amelia are competing at the next level," Baily said. "They are on a fantastic pace."
The meet heads into Day 2 on Thursday with the completion of both the decathlon (5 p.m. start) and heptathlon (5:30 p.m.), as well as the running of the women's and men's 10,000 meters, the first of those races beginning at 9:45 p.m.
