Mountain West Releases 18-Game Conference Slate for 2020-21.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team will open its 2020-21 Mountain West schedule on New Year's Eve, announced Friday by the league office.
Â
The 18-game schedule is subject to approval from state, county and local officials. Each institution will play nine home games and make nine road trips during the conference season. League play will determine the seeding for the 2021 MW Women's Basketball Championship, which will be held March 7-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Â
"First off, I really commend the conference office for their efforts in putting the women's basketball schedule together in the circumstances," head coach Ryun Williams said. "It is not an easy task, but they accommodated every school in terms of travel and budget to get this finalized appropriately."
Â
The conference schedule is not the only games the Rams will be in action for as the non-conference contests are yet to be finalized. In mid-September, the NCAA approved a first contest date for Nov. 25. Colorado State will begin official practice this coming Wednesday, Oct. 14. Â
Â
The Biggest Little City in the World is where the Rams will tip-off MW play on Dec. 31, against Nevada in Reno. All times are still TBA. Colorado State will have another away trip at New Mexico the next Wednesday (Jan. 6) prior to hosting their first home game against Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Â
Challenges will come early for Williams' squad as they will be away for five of their first seven contests. However, that means the schedule rewards them with the flipped ratio to end the season at home in addition to three of the last four games in Fort Collins.
Â
At Moby Arena, the Rams will host Air Force (Jan. 9), Nevada (Jan. 18), San Jose State (Jan. 27), Wyoming (Feb. 3), San Diego State (Feb. 11), UNLV (Feb. 13), Utah State (Feb. 20), Boise State (Feb. 27), and New Mexico (March 3).
Â
Outside of the aforementioned Reno and Albuquerque trip, CSU will travel to Wyoming (Jan. 13), UNLV (Jan. 21), San Diego State (Jan. 23), Boise State (Jan. 30), Utah State (Feb. 6), Fresno State (Feb. 17), and Air Force (Feb. 24).
Â
"It is always exciting to see that league schedule because you get to see what's coming down the line," Williams added. "Our conference is a really competitive league, so we'll be ready to compete come December 31st."
Â
Last season the Rams experienced an up-and-down campaign, finishing with a 6-12 conference record and 12-18 record overall. However, the Rams are poised to trend skyward with the addition of four freshmen, three transfers and two now-eligible players that sat out last year due to redshirt seasons.
