Rams Coast to 96-54 Win Over Cougars

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Another up and down the court game for the Colorado State women's basketball team as the Rams neared the century mark in a 96-54 win against Colorado Christian Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.

For the second straight game all 16 student-athletes checked into the game and all but three saw the ball go through the hoop from their own accord. Four players scored into double digits with Karly Murphy and McKenna Hofschild leading the bunch with a dozen followed by Tori Williams (11) and Lore Devos (10). The Rams shot over 60% from the floor and from the three-point line. It wasn't just that the Rams were converting but rather where, as CSU poured in 50 points from the paint en route to improving to a 2-0 record on the season.

"In preparation, we wanted to run and establish the low post game – where we thought we had an advantage," assistant coach Rico Burkett said. "From there we planned to go inside-out and get the wings involved whether it was shooting or attacking the rim with purpose. It is neat to see our shooting percentages and where because we can play a lot of different ways with the depth and skill of this team. It gives us versatility in adjustments when teams try to take us out of a certain aspect of play, we can pivot to another strong suit."

Defensively, the Rams displayed their length again, tallying eight blocks – one less than game one's total. Sydney Mech's 6-foot-2 frame swatted two shots to go along with her three from Wednesday's contest. CSU turned 15 Cougar turnovers into 24 points. Ten of those points came in the second quarter when the defense began to dial it in. One such series included a Murphy steal and downcourt pass to Devos who's momentum was carrying her out of bounds but was able to dish it back to Jamie Bonnarens for a transition three-ball. The transaction was a part of a 9-0 CSU run shortly after the Rams started the quarter with scoring 14 unanswered points.

At the half, the Rams led 59-26, marking back-to-back games the offense has put up as many points going into the break. In the third frame, the Rams continued their hot shooting by going 12 for 14 on the floor including 3-of-4 from three, which put them well in the driver's seat to another victory.

On the glass, Murphy collected a game-high eight rebounds with freshman Cali Clark pulling in seven. Through the first two games, the duo is tied for the team lead at 14 apiece.

"We did a great job at handling our business and some adversity in these first two games, but now the level of competition is going to increase night-in and night-out," Burkett added. "We have to be ready to handle it. We go right into the fire of going to the defending champions [Fresno State]. They are poised and waiting, so we are looking forward to taking our show on the road and seeing how we stack up and there is no better opportunity than against them."

Next, the Rams will head to defending Mountain West champions Fresno State for their first Mountain West two-game series. Tip-off in game one is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. PT with game two at the same time on Friday.

"We need to continue to take care of the ball and always be the aggressor. We had some good spurts today where we were aggressive on defense and it really showed how it fed into our offense. Focusing on our defense going forward will be key because we have a lot of weapons offensively."
