Rams Use Late Run To Put Away Northern Arizona, 91-52

CSU closes the game on a 31-2 run over the final nine minutes
FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Playing its second game in three days, Colorado State overcame a sluggish shooting first half and drained 10 three pointers to spur a closing 31-2 run to pull away for a 91-52 victory over Northern Arizona Monday night in Moby Arena. The Rams improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 0-3.

Down 5-4 in the early going, CSU went on a 17-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to lead 21-7 with eight minutes remaining in the opening 20. NAU came back with a 12-0 run to cut it to a two-point game three minutes later, but sophomore Dischon Thomas hit a jumper to make it a two-possession game. The game stayed within five the rest of the opening half as CSU eventually took a 35-32 lead into the intermission.

The Rams came out and started lighting up the scoreboard early and often in the second half, connecting on its next seven three-point attempts to stretch the lead out to 20 at 57-37 with 14 minutes to play. The Lumberjacks put on a run to cut it to 10 at 60-50 with 9:17 to go, but junior Kendle Moore made a driving layup to start the final run that led to the 39-point victory.

Colorado State finished at 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the field, including 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the arc after going just 1-of-9 in the first half. Northern Arizona shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) for the game and was limited to just 28.6 percent (8-of-28) in the final 20 minutes. CSU won the battle of the boards, 37-27, and converted 15 NAU turnovers into 25 points.

The Rams were led by sophomore Isaiah Stevens with 23 points, nine assists and five rebounds. Sophomore David Roddy had 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while junior Kendle Moore and redshirt-freshman James Moors each chipped in 12. Cameron Shelton was the leader for the Lumberjacks with 18 points.

• The Rams got a great contribution off the bench, as CSU had a 31-9 scoring advantage among the reserves after just 12 points off the bench in the opener.

• CSU moved into a slight 3-2 advantage in the overall series, but the Rams have won all three games at Moby Arena.
• Four Rams scored in double figures as all 12 players saw action, with 11 of them scoring.
• This was Stevens' 16th career game with five or more assists (CSU is 13-3) and the 24th time in just 34 games that he has led the team in assists.
• The 39-point win is the 13th largest for CSU in Moby Arena history.
• CSU has won 13 straight season openers and 39 consecutive home openers and the 45th of 30 or more points.
• Moore's four steals are one off his career high.
