Rams Use Season-High 15 3s to Down Aggies in Logan, 67-61

2/12/2020 1:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Colorado State shot 15-of-31 behind the arc to help defeat Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – Behind a season-best performance from the 3-point line, Colorado State contained Utah State for a 67-61 win Wednesday afternoon at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

The Rams rained in 15 shots from behind the arc to mark a team-high on the season, which was clearly the difference maker in the Aggies' elementary school game with over 400 children in the stands. The road win for CSU improves its record to 11-13 overall and 5-8 in the Mountain West. Utah State falls to 7-18 on the season and 2-12 in conference.

Leading the Rams on the day was redshirt-junior Jamie Bonnarens with a season-high 20 points, going 7-of-8 shooting with a perfect 4 for 4 from 3. Tori Williams, acting as the facilitator, tied her season-best assists at seven and kept the ball out of the Aggies' hands with zero turnovers. Redshirt-senior Andrea Brady, of Salt Lake City, Utah, chipped in a dozen points and a team-high nine rebounds in front of over 25 family members. Megan Jacobs and Makenzie Ellis aided in the scoring with 10 and 13 points, respectively.

"It was a really good team effort on both ends of the floor," head coach Ryun Williams said. "Everybody was involved from the start as far as shot making and sharing the ball. We had easy, smart passes for high-percentage layups, which has been hard to come by for us. I'm proud of the victory of how we played, but especially after responding from the recent losses. It shows their character and grit, so I'm very proud with the performance today."

The game started off with a series of runs with the home team leading it off with the first two made baskets. Three of the Rams' five first quarter 3s followed in an 11-0 run, but Utah State responded right back with eight consecutive points to retake the lead. Brady put the rest of the frame on her back with the final seven points, including two shots from distance for the 18-12 CSU lead at the first break.

Contrary to the first quarter, the second saw no more than two consecutive baskets by either team. Again, the Rams leaned on the deep ball with four of their five made shots from 3 to total nine in the first half. Utah State went into the break with a little pep after a full court heave pass to Marlene Aniambossou with seconds left resulted in a banked-in trey at the buzzer. Both teams were shooting in the low 40 percent at the half with CSU holding the 32-28 lead.

To start the second half, each team mirrored the other in the first four successful possession until the Rams started trading treys for Utah State's twos. Just like the previous quarters, majority of CSU's made baskets were 3s – 5-of-6 this time. A Jacobs free throw concluded scoring in the third with CSU holding a slight 50-45 advantage.

Off her seventh assist of the game, Williams found Makenzie Ellis for the Rams' 15th 3-ball in the game at the 8:36 mark, making an eight-point lead. The Aggies brought the game within four with free throws at the 2:25 mark, but that was the closest USU would get as CSU held tight down the stretch. Four made free throws from Bonnarens and Brady in the final 30 seconds sealed the Rams' third road win of the season.

"I came out more aggressive with my shot," Bonnarens said. "In Fresno State game I did the same, so I just wanted to replicate. You must get your mind right and I did that today. We feed off each other well today and created excitement within. It was a great feeling to get the road win."

The Rams are back in action Saturday against Wyoming for a 2 p.m. tip inside Moby Arena.
