Five individual performances resulted in upward movement on CSU’s all-time list.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Five Rams either improved their mark or entered Colorado State's all-time top-20 list in their respective events Thursday during day one of the Don Kirby Invitational on the campus of New Mexico.
The two that moved into CSU's top-5 are freshmen. Celyn Stermer did so in the pole vault, while Tom Willems clocked the time in his 400-meter debut. But there were more freshmen and Ram newcomers to make an impression. Freshman, DeVon Washington, was on Willems' heels and transfer Haley Showalter entered CSU's top-20 in the weight throw. Lastly, senior Amelia Harvey for the second-straight week advanced on top-10 lists and in different events.
Stermer, of Seattle, Wash., placed fourth among a field of 28 with a height of 12'8''. The personal record improved by two inches, leapfrogging Christine Ahn (12'6.25''; 2/22/03) and teammate Aliya Simpson (12'6.75''; 2/22/18) to garner the fifth spot ever in the green and gold.
The Australian native Willems crossed the 400m at 47.81, overpassing Ronald Sayles' 47.92 set last season. Willems finished the race in third with Washington close behind in fifth across the 37-person field with the 15th-best time, 48.48, in school history.
Last week, Harvey improved upon her triple jump to No. 8 all-time. The Colorado Springs product slid into the No. 9 spot in the 200-meter race this time. She jumped from the 15th position after crossing at 24.50 for 18th place in the event. Ahead of her were two Rams, Lauren Gale and Jessica Ozoude, in ninth and 10th place, respectively. Gale, making her season debut in uniform, was .02 seconds off her personal record (6th CSU all-time), while Ozoude, finished .86 behind her CSU record-holding 23.38 mark.
The other personal record that made waves on the school list came from inside the net. In the women's weight throw, Showalter measured the 12th-best throw at 60'7.25'', extending her season-best mark by 1'3.75''. The Wisconsin transfer has a personal best of 62'8'' when in a Badger uniform. However, she finished ninth among the 52 competitors and wasn't the top Ram either. Junior Tarynn Sieg tossed a season-best 62'6.50'' to place seventh of 52.
Colorado State notched six other personal-best or season-best marks on day one inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Friday's second and final day of the Don Kirby Invitational will start at 8:30 a.m. with the shot put and 9:30 on the track with 60-meter hurdles.
