Colorado State Track and Field teams set to compete at Don Kirby Invite and Iowa State Classic.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A portion of the Colorado State track and field program headed south Wednesday, while the other group will depart east Thursday for competition in the Don Kirby Invitational and the Iowa State Classic, respectively.

The Don Kirby Invitational, hosted by New Mexico, not only will have the most diverse competition the Rams have seen thus far but, the Albuquerque Convention Center serves as the site of the Mountain West Indoor Championships later this month.

Equally important for the distance crew is the Iowa State Classic, one of the biggest indoor track and field meets of the college season. In the past six years, the meet has combined for 126 qualifying times/marks for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Harry Hoak Track facility has hosted nine Big 12 Indoor Championships and features a 300-meter track with eight 42-inch lanes, making it the largest and one of the fastest indoor surfaces in the world.

Head Coach Brian Bedard
On the focus of the meet…
"It is a big week for us. We are facing our broadest and stiffest competition in addition to competing in the venue that we'll see later in the month for the Mountain West meet, so it is an important meet for us. I'm expecting big things out of the crew we are bringing down there. It will be interesting to see if the numbers [of teams] drop off a little bit this year, because of the schedule being earlier due to USA Championships being hosted there on Friday and Saturday. However, it's also the NCAA Championships venue, so they [numbers] could be up. Generally, there is a lot of great competition across many different schools and conferences. We will have all we can handle competition-wise, which will be good for us."

Head Distance Coach Art Siemers
On the Iowa State Classic…
"The distance squad is excited to travel to Ames for the prestigious Iowa State Classic.  The team always loves to travel to sea level and go after their personal best times and move up on the CSU top 20 lists.  It is also our last race before the Conference Championships which adds to the importance."

A Refresher from Last Time Out (UCCS Mountain Lion Open; 2/7-2/8)
Amelia Harvey and Maria Muzzio improved upon their already top-10 positions in the triple jump and shot put, respectively, while Tameryn Coryell vaulted into the No. 10 spot.
• As far as event victories, the Rams swept the shot put and 60-meter hurdles on the men and women's side, while also winning the men's 800 meter and women's triple jump.
• Coryell, a redshirt-freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo., improved 3.5'' on her previous best to reach 12'3.5'' and place second – her best placement as well. She moved up three spots in CSU history, bringing the total to four current Rams in the top 10.
• Harvey, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., won the triple jump by a margin of three feet to the next competitor. The senior improved 7.5 inches to set a personal record of 40'6.25'', passing former teammates McKenzie Wright (39'11.5'') and Lindsay Read (40'1.25'') to sit in fifth all-time at CSU.
• Despite tossing the shot put eight inches further than her previous record, Muzzio's 52'1.75'' wasn't enough to climb further from her No. 8 spot on the school list. The senior from Fairfax, Va., is now two inches from Jessica Sharbono's seventh-place mark that was set in 2014. Muzzio also won the event for the fifth SP win this season.
Mariano Kis who won the shot put on the men's side – his fourth of the season. The true freshman upped his PR by 1.25'' to now stand at 54'10.75''.
• Freshman Jordan Lanning polished off her best collegiate meet with securing the 60-meter hurdle win and improved her time for the fourth consecutive run, shaving off a collective .22 seconds. On the weekend, she notched two wins (60mh and high jump) and two PRs (60mh and long jump).
• Completing the Ram sweep in the hurdles was Germain Barnes who also protected his No. 1 qualifying time by a sliver of .06 seconds. The victory was the first of the season for the sophomore.
• The last Ram victory of the meet came from the last race a Ram was present. In the final turn of the 800-meter race, Yanique Borne turned on the jets and passed the leader to cross at 1:56.92.
• Continuing her dominance in an unattached position, Ashton Hallsted won her seventh weight throw event in as many tries this season. On the men's side, freshman Lane Walter, throwing unattached, had a season-best 17.56m in the third-place position.

What'd We do Last Year at Don Kirby (2/8/19-2/9/19)?
Kelcey Bedard recorded the best weight throw in over 14 years within the Mountain West with a mark of 72'10'' (22.20m), which ranks second on CSU's all-time indoor list. She was named MW Field Athlete of the Week for her performance.
• The Rams broke the program record in the women's 4x400 relay at the Don Kirby Invitational. Lauren Gale, Jessica Ozoude, Michelle Gould and Jasmine Chesson combined to stop the clock in 3:42.19, edging out the previous record of 3:42.89 set in 2017.
Linnea Jonsson registered a personal-best mark in the women's weight throw at 62'5'' (19.02m) that was good for seventh in the meet, and still ranks ninth on CSU's all-time indoor list.
• On the men's side, Bailey King placed fifth with a PR of 64-1 (19.53m) – the 15th-best distance on CSU's all-time indoor list.
• On the track, sophomore Jessica Ozoude was fifth in the women's 200 meters and fourth among collegians with a then indoor-best time of 23.74. She later improved her PR to 23.38.
• Sophomore Jasmine Chesson registered an indoor-best performance that still stands, finishing in 24.78. Chesson resides 14th in school history.
Destinee Rocker registered a personal-best performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.26 – second on CSU's all-time indoor list.
• Gale placed in the top five in women's 400 meters competition and among the top three collegians with a collegiate-best time of 54.25. Gale's time ranks second on CSU's all-time indoor list.

What'd We do Last Year at Iowa State Classic?
• The Rams did not compete at the Iowa State Classic last year nor have any current student-athletes throughout their career at CSU.
