Rams Stave Off Pesky San Jose State, 78-71

CSU has won all 20 of the meetings with the Spartans in the program's history

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Colorado State bounced back and closed out a tight contest, earning a 78-71 win over a pesky San Jose State squad Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Rams improved to 19-10 overall and 10-6 in the Mountain West, while the Spartans fell to 7-21 and 3-13 in the league.

This was a game that stayed tight the entire way, with the largest lead by either team being 12 and that coming late in the contest. The game went back and forth in the first half, with the Spartans coming out with a three-point lead at the break, 43-40. Defense tightened up for the second half, and the teams were tied at 59 with 9:07 to play. A made free throw by redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho started an 8-0 run that put CSU on top for good at 60-59. SJSU did make it close in the final minutes, cutting the gap to four with 1:14 to play. However, solid free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the game, as the Rams went 5-of-6 from the line in the final 50 seconds.

For the game, CSU shot just 50.0 percent (25-of-50) from the floor and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the three-point line. San Jose State was held to 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field and 29.0 percent (9-of-31) from the arc. The Rams dominated the glass 40-27 and outscored the Spartans 28-7 on fast break points.

CSU was led by sophomore Adam Thistlewood with 16 points, while freshman Dischon Thomas provided a big spark off the bench, finishing with 13 points, nine in the first half, as he hit all six field goal attempts in the game. Redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while freshman David Roddy also chipped in 10. Seneca Knight led SJSU with 37 points.

STAT OF THE GAME
• CSU got 29 points off the bench, tying for the second most this season, as redshirt-seniors Kris Martin and Hyron Edwards also had eight and five, respectively, and freshman John Tonje added three.

NOTES
• CSU has now won all 20 meetings between the two programs, including nine at Moby Arena.
• The win secures just the seventh winning season in Mountain West play in the Rams' 21-year membership in the league.
• The 10 Mountain West wins are already the fourth-most wins in MW play for CSU and the first time to 10 wins since 2016-17.
• This is just the 12th time in school history that CSU has won 10 conference games and just the 19th time that CSU will finish above .500 in league action (87 years of conference play combined between four leagues)
• The 19 overall wins are tied for the 11th most in school annals.
• The 13 points were the second most for Thomas this season.
• Carvacho picked up the 13th double-double of the season (CSU is 12-1 when he records one), 48th double-double of his career and 34th all-time in Mountain West play, the latter two league records.
• Carvacho also played in his 129th game as a Ram, one shy of the school record of 130 held by Dorian Green (2009-13).

NEXT UP
• The Rams will play its final road game of the regular season, traveling to Viejas Arena to take on #4 San Diego State Tuesday night.
