Colorado State Signs Transfers from Seton Hall, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and College of Southern Idaho
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A trio of transfers signed national letters of intent Wednesday to join the Colorado State women's basketball program, head coach Ryun Williams announced.
McKenna Hofschild, a former finalist for Minnesota's Miss Basketball, comes with three years eligibility from Seton Hall where she played 18 games for the Pirates during her freshman campaign. Recently named NJCAA Honorable All-American and Region 18 Player of the Year, Petra Farkas, arrives to Fort Collins with two years eligibility after leading College of Southern Idaho in three categories last season. Karly Murphy, an All-Horizon League recipient from Wisconsin-Green Bay, also brings two years eligibility, but as a graduate student upon completion of her bachelor's degree this May.
"We are very excited for the addition of Petra, Karly, and McKenna," Williams said. "Each are high character and competitive individuals who will represent Colorado State and our program in a first-class manner on the floor and in the classroom."
Bringing speed to the Rams is the 5-foot-5 guard, Hofschild, that is a year removed from being the sixth-ranked recruit out of the North Star State. Despite competing with three other freshman guards at Seton Hall, Hofschild took advantage of her 8.4 minutes per contest by posting averages of 2.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals in each appearance. Prior to her time in South Orange, Hofschild graduated Prior Lake High School as the school's most decorated player, holding school records in career 3 pointers, single season points and career points, while also breaking a 37-year-old state record by dropping 63 points in a single game. As a junior, she led the state in scoring en route to Prior Lake's first ever Class 4A state tournament berth after scoring 42 points in the sectional championship game. Outside of high school ball, Hofschild was a standout for one of Minnesota's finest AAU programs, Minnesota Fury Gauntlet.
"McKenna is a get downhill point guard who has great ability to score and distribute," Williams said. "I am excited about the toughness and competitiveness she brings to the floor in addition to her open floor game that will allow us to play much faster."
At 5-foot-10, Farkas fills the all-around role as her team-high finishes in scoring, rebounding and assisting also resided in the top-3 list for the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Farkas tallied 23 double-digit scoring games this past season, helping the Golden Eagles to a 22-9 finish and a trip the Region 18 Championship Game. In her two seasons at CSI, the Golden Eagles went 41-21 overall with Farkas playing in 61 of 62 possible games and starting 35 of them. Before playing collegiately, Farkas, of Kecskemet, Hungary, played on U16, U18 and U20 for the Hungary National Teams.
"Petra comes to us from one of the best junior college coaches and programs in the country," Williams said about Farkas. "She is a very versatile, hard-nosed competitor that cares a lot about winning. I am really impressed with how she leads and the motor that she plays with is contagious. She is a big, strong, intelligent guard that will bring many positive skills to the floor."
Murphy, a 6-1 forward, is the most experienced out of the three new Rams having spent the last four years at Wisconsin-Green Bay. After redshirting her first season, she started 32 games on the 2017-18 squad that went 29-4 to win the Horizon League outright and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Shooting a team-best 50.2 percent from the floor and averaging 8.1 points per game, Murphy landed on the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. An injury led to another redshirt season in the year to follow, but Murphy rebounded in 2019-20 by appearing in all 32 games with 19 starts. The River Falls, Wis. native had 19 career double-digit scoring games during her two seasons on the court with the Phoenix and will leave Green Bay with a degree in Business Administration, which is the same academic area that she will continue to pursue in Fort Collins.
"I love the toughness and competitiveness that Karly plays with," Williams said about Murphy. "She understands what it takes to win and has been a solid scorer and contributor in a championship program. It is also exciting that as a graduate transfer she will have two years of eligibility with the Rams!"
Murphy and Farkas are immediately eligible to compete next season, while Hofschild's status awaits a vote by the NCAA in May.
