Colorado State Cruises Past Boise State, 75-53, for Second 20-Point Win in Series
BOISE, Id. – Back-to-back 20-point wins summed up the Rams' visit to Boise State with Friday afternoon's 75-53 victory serving as the exclamation point in Colorado State's sweep of the Broncos inside of ExtraMile Arena.Â
Â
A 14-0 run in the first quarter set the tone that did not change as the Rams led by double digits for majority of the game. The two-game sweep marks the fourth this season for Colorado State and the third versus a Mountain West opponent. The sweep against the Broncos is the first for the Rams since 2016. With the Rams' fifth win in a row, CSU improved to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in the Mountain West. Boise State dropped to 8-5 overall and 5-5 in the MW.
Â
At times, McKenna Hofschild dominated on the drive, finishing with 16 points, while sprinkling it her usual assists with six and four steals, but then at times it was Lore Devos who had a game-high 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks. Coming off game one's 19 points, Ellie Boni had a steady 11 for the last Ram to enter double digits scoring-wise. This left a lot of points to divvy up to get to 75, signaling a team effort. Jamie Bonnarens had nine points, while Karly Murphy and Tori Williams added eight and seven, respectively.
Â
On the glass, four Rams – Clark, Murphy, Williams and Devos – pulled in nine rebounds apiece to lead the Rams to a 52-38 advantage. It represented a new career-high for Clark who also chipped in six points. Bonnarens corralled a career-high six rebounds.
Â
"Really good start defensively again today," head coach Ryun Williams started with. "Boise State was having a hard time getting some rhythm. They tried to go inside to [Mallory] McGwire, but we did a great job of sealing that up. Offensively, we scored at all five positions and we had players finding their flow early on in the game. I wish we would have finished like we started but I am really happy with the victories, obviously. These second games in the series are really difficult. You can see it in both teams as you are searching for that energy, but we find enough today to get another great road win against a program we respect to the highest degree. Beating Boise twice at Boise is something to be proud of, but now we are onto the next one."
Â
Going into the second quarter it was a 22-9 Ram advantage and then into the half it was a 41-29 lead with Colorado State shooting 50% compared to the Broncos' 32% clip. Colorado State was also making it easy on themselves by scoring 20 of its points in the paint.
Â
Boise State came out in the third quarter on a 7-2 run, which brought their deficit down to seven points – the lowest it had been since the first quarter. However, a Hofschild converted drive and foul for the old-fashioned 3-point play – her second of the day – put it back to 10 points. Both teams went back-and-forth for a few possessions until seven unanswered from CSU starting with a Devos trey put the third quarter to a close and the Rams back up by 15. The fourth quarter was a slow climb to that 20-point barrier to two-up Wednesday's 71-51 win with a 22-point win.Â
Â
"This is a fun basketball team to coach," Williams added. "I am really proud of them. Also this was a great weekend for Tori [Williams] and Lauren [Brocke] being from Boise. They are tremendous Rams. Tori might have struggled shooting the ball this weekend, but every time that happens she comes out the next weekend lights out. Lauren is the leader on our bench. She knows the game plan as well as any coach. She is coaching that bench. I know her role is a little different than she would like, but she accepts anything we ask her to do. So for these two players to come in here to their hometown and get two victories is special."
Â
Next, The Rams will host Wyoming in another two-game conference series, starting Thursday Feb. 4th at 6 p.m. The second game of the series is Colorado State's UCHealth game on Saturday Feb. 6th with a 1 p.m. MT tip.
