Season-high Points for Colorado State against Lipscomb
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sixteen 3-pointers – the fourth-most in Colorado State single-game history – propelled the Rams to an 81-55 win over Lipscomb Sunday afternoon at Moby Arena.
A season-high 81 points were scored with four Rams in double digits led by Upe Atosu's season-best 21 points. McKenna Hofschild and Petra Farkas contributed 17 and 15 points, respectively, while both knocking down five 3s. For Farkas, the point total marked the most in her career thanks to the 5-of-5 shooting from distance. Sophomore Cali Clark chipped in a dozen along with a team-best nine rebounds. The victory moved CSU to 5-0 – head coach Ryun Williams' best start in his 10 seasons at CSU.
"What got Petra going was an assist by Bengisu [Alper]," Williams said. "It was an extra pass. An unselfish play. Then Petra sees the ball go in. A couple possessions later, Cali drives the middle and plays her pivot game, finding Petra for a three. That really got her going. Our threes came off good screens, good passing and good two-foot play in the lane. That is what I like to see. The flow of our offense was in sync. We've been wanting the 3-ball to go in more, because we think we can shoot it better than what we had been up until today, so this was good for our rhythm and confidence."
The game was a series of runs for CSU and its in-rhythm offense. After a Bison basket to start the second quarter, the Rams rallied off 13 unanswered points. The Bison stopped the bleeding with two buckets, but then a 9-0 Ram run followed en route to a 26-point second quarter, which marked the most in a single quarter this season. At the half, CSU led 42-23, making it the highest scoring half for the Rams as well.
Not a whole lot changed in the second half. The Rams continued to pour it on, scoring another 26 points in the third quarter and limiting LU to under 15 points for the third-straight quarter. Midway through the third, CSU erupted again, but this time on a 16-0 sequence. For an exclamation mark on the quarter and the game, Hofschild pulled up for a few feet behind the arc for a buzzer-beating trey to send the Rams into the fourth with a 68-35 lead. Farkas had two of her threes in the third, then connected on three more in the final quarter.
"I'm so proud of our team on how they handled this stretch," Williams added. "We've had a lot of games and quick turnarounds. Physically it has been a challenge, but mentally even more as we incorporate different scouts and different assignments. I believe that is where we have grown the most as a basketball team. The performances on the floor are great, but it's the day-to-day behind-the-scenes tasks that the team is excelling in, which will help us come conference season."
The Rams will enjoy a six-day break until they return to the court next Sunday, Nov. 28th against Louisville with another noon tipoff.
