Buzkova/Mihaljevic advance to round of 16

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Colorado State's first venture to the ITA Fall Nationals produced a split of matches in the first round for the two doubles teams which qualified.

Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic needed three sets to advance against Indiana's Laura Masic and Lara Schneider, 6-7 (10), 6-1, 12-10. Now 16-1 on the fall, the Rams' pairing will face the overall top seed from Wake Forest, Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth at the Barnes Tennis Center.

CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran was impressed with the way both teams stood tall against strong opponents, and in the case of Buzkova and Mihaljevic, they had to battle in the bookend sets, with an impressive result in the second.

"I think Radka and Matea didn't feel the greatest, but they were able to hang on and win that match" Tran said. "They've always been consistent, so I'm happy for them to overcome the battles they faced and get the win. Everybody is good here, so we're pleased with how they played.

"It was up and down, but they started to play their tennis. When it comes down to a 10-point tiebreaker, they were having fun. It was emotional, but they stayed tough.

Later in the afternoon, the CSU pair of Somer Dalla-Bona and Sarka Richterova dropped a three-set decision to Pepperdine's Lisa Zaar and Victoria Flores – the fifth seed in the draw – 7-5, 3-6, 10-0. They will face Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein of Florida in the consolation bracket.

"Sarka and Somer played incredible. They played an awesome match," Tran said. "For them to keep improving, I think that's the best team they've played, and they're going to continue to get better. That team was extremely talented and tough. We're happy they played well. I know they're going to be disappointed, but they're a great team and they're just getting better."

Doubles matches are expected to begin late in the afternoon, after the completion of two rounds of singles play in both the men's and women's brackets. Scores and livestreams can be found on the ITA's tournament page.
