Rams show major progression during fall campaign

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Getting to play against some of the best competition in the country was a great – and historic – way for Colorado State's women's tennis team to close out the fall campaign.

The Rams had two doubles teams qualify for the ITA Fall Nationals, the first qualifiers in program history, with both of their runs came to a close on the second day of play at the Barnes Tennis Complex.

The team of Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic  sustained just their second loss of the season and it came to the overall top seed in the draw, the Wake Forest tandem of Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth, who advanced to the quarterfinals with their 6-3, 6-2 victory. It brought an end to a successful start for the duo, posting a 16-2 mark, including two tournament titles and three finals appearances.

Dalla-Bona and Richterova dropped a three-set match to Florida's Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-6 in the consolation bracket in a match that played out past 10:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Paired together at ITA Regionals, the combination posted a 7-3 record in the fall, reaching one tournament final.

The losses aside, there was nothing to be discouraged with about the way the entire team progressed this fall under first-year coach Mai-Ly Tran. Six players finished the fall with winning records in singles play, and all three final doubles teams finished with winning marks.

"It's great to have both teams at nationals that are able to compete at this level," Tran said. "Both pairs proved they're able to perform at this level, which will only help us in the spring. We played some of the best teams in the country, and they exposed some area that other teams were not able to do. Going forward, we will need to use this as preparation and motivation for the spring to raise our level another notch.

"Overall, I'm pleased with our progress this fall, but I know this group has a lot of potential to develop even more."

The Rams begin dual play in the spring when they travel to Arizona for a pair of matches against New Mexico State (Jan. 21, Phoenix) and Arizona State (Jan. 22, Tempe). The squad's first home dual will take place Feb. 5 when the Rams host Metro State at 3:15 p.m.
