Rams Sweep Throwing Events and Lexie Keller Notches No. 2 Pentathlon in School History

LARAMIE, Wyo. – A dominating display by the throwing squad along with a stellar pentathlon from Lexie Keller sent the Colorado State track and field program back down I-287 in high hopes Friday evening after day one of the Wyoming Power Meet.

The multis, women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon, started the action at the Hager-LeBar Indoor Track at War Memorial Fieldhouse. Keller, of Albuquerque, N.M., won the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump en route to taking the overall pentathlon with a score of 3946, which jumped her from seventh to second all-time in CSU history. An impressive aspect of Keller's day was that aside from the seldom ran 55mH (8.04, 4th in CSU History), she did not hit a personal record in any of the other four events, leaving even more room to improve going forward.

Jordan Lanning placed second in the pentathlon with a score of 3787 – good for 10th in school history and up from her previous spot of 14th. The men continue in the heptathlon Saturday with action starting at 10:30 in the remaining events of 60mH, pole vault and 1,000m. True freshman Elijah Scott sits in second with a score of 2756.

The throwing circle often is a bright spot in the Brian Bedard led program and Friday certainly fit that narrative. Mariano Kis won the weight throw and the shot put, while the Tarynn Sieg (Bown) took the women's weight throw and Gabi McDonald the shot put to complete the Ram sweep.

Outside of winning both the men's events, Kis unleashed a 61'0.75'' shot put to catapult from his 18th spot in the record book to the third spot. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native now sits behind record holder Mostafa Hassan and No. 2 Magnus Lohse – both All-Americans.

McDonald improved two spots on the record list to No. 8 all-time with her 52'4'' throw, while Ram newcomer Michaela Hawkins, transfer from North Dakota, increased the No. 15 mark that she set last week to No. 12 after a 50'0'' throw.

In all the women tallied 10 top-20 marks and five other personal records, while the men collected two and one, respectively.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On the team overall…
"We didn't have a full squad competing due to finals, but the ones that did compete really impressed. We got some things done. It was a fun meet with good atmosphere considering it was just two teams – Us and Wyoming. We had some great highlights across the board, making it worth our while."

On Mariano Kis…
"I'm really proud of Nano. He had a great offseason of training and were looking forward to the season and then he got an injury that he had to deal with. The training staff did a great job working with him to get him back faster than we originally thought. His indoor season was in doubt, but he was diligent in rehab and got himself back into the position that we thought we was going to be in. He was looking too good in practice not to put him in. We are glad we made that decision."

 On Lexie Keller…
"Again, this is someone that made a committed effort in the offseason to improve across the board. We saw the way she came back in late summer, early fall and knew that she was at a different level as an athlete. From a mental and physical standpoint, she is in a good place to continue to reach higher levels in her events."
