Rams use 24-6 Run to End Game
TEMPE, Ariz. – Ryun Williams told his team in the huddle going into final quarter that it was going to be their quarter and the team listened and then made it come true, securing the 59-52 win over Harvard in Colorado State's opening game of the Arizona State Classic Saturday afternoon inside the Desert Financial Arena.
Â
The Rams trailed by three points at the time and had not led since the second quarter when the Crimson closed the first half on a 10-0 run to lead 28-25 at halftime. Coming out of the fourth quarter huddle, Cali Clark scored within nine seconds on a strong drop step layup. Harvard answered with a bucket, but the Rams proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to take ahold of the game. CSU outscored Harvard 16-6 in the final 10 minutes and kept the Crimson to a brutal 4.8% shooting (1-of-21). Colorado State improved to 6-1 on the season, while Harvard dropped to 3-5.
Â
"Karly [Murphy] and Cali [Clark] were really dominant down low tonight," Williams said. "When Harvard began to pinch in the post that is when we made a few corner 3s and stretched them back out. That was a tough game. Harvard is a tall, stout, and intelligent team. We played a tough and more concentrated second half. Once we got control, we made just enough plays to earn this solid win. The team played with a lot of confidence down the stretch, which we are proud of."
Â
Four Rams reached double digits in scoring with Kendyll Kinzer leading the way with 13 points to go along with her four assists. Karly Murphy notched her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Upe Atosu and McKenna Hofschild each contributed 10 points with the latter dishing out a team-best five assists.
Â
On paper, the third quarter was equal at 18-18, but the Rams concluded it on an 8-0 run that prompted Williams to feel like his team was starting to figure it out. Prior to that run, Harvard stretched its lead to 10 points at the 6:48 mark before Hofschild scored eight to keep the Rams in it. After a HU bucket, the other Rams streamlined Hofschild's heating up by hitting their own shots. A trey from Kendyll Kinzer, another Clark basket and a Sydney Mech three in the final seconds sent all the momentum the Rams' way.
Â
Colorado State shot 38.1% from the field and 29.2% from distance, while keeping Harvard at bay with 27.5% and a mere 8% from three-point land.
Â
The Rams will continue play in the Arizona State Classic Sunday against UTSA with tip scheduled at approximately 2 p.m. or 30 minutes after the first game of the day.
