All-American Eric Hamer Reestablishes CSU School Record in 5,000m
AMES, Iowa – While waiting for his shrimp and parmesan sirloin at Applebee's, the results finalized telling Eric Hamer what he and the staff already inferred – he broke his own Colorado State record in the 5,000-meter race Friday afternoon at the Iowa State Classic.
Â
The race to beat the record was more of a race than the actual race. Hamer, of Monument, Colo., crossed the finish line in first place at 13:37.73 – 10.53 seconds in front of the next opponent. However, it was just 2.38 seconds better than his already standing school record that he set at last season's Boston University Season Opener on Dec. 7th, 2019.
Â
"The way Eric has been executing his races the last two weeks is phenomenal," distance coach Art Siemers said. "He is being patient when the pace feels slow for him early and then once he makes a move, he is so strong carrying it to the finish. His last 3K today was 8:02, which is an elite time in itself. He is positioning himself well to be a contender in the NCAA Championships."
Â
A contender indeed when his time today did not even replace the NCAA-best time he recorded last week at the Mines Front Range Open. The school record book does not use times that require altitude conversion, which was the case with Hamer's mark going from 14:16.29 to 13:36.18. Today's mark proved that last week's conversion was no fluke as the Harry Hoak Track sits not even 1,000-feet above sea level thus requiring no manipulation.
"He did not have an easy go today, because he passed the rabbit at 2K, and then ended up lapping probably half the field," Siemers explained. "There was one student-athlete he was lapping that tried to be courteous and move to the outside of the lane for Eric to pass on the inside, but he misjudged how fast Eric was coming and there was a slight collision that caused a second or so off Eric's momentum. Luckily, it was not worse. Typically, in these races you don't lap people, but the field was different this year with COVID and cross country season overlapping with the indoor season."
Â
Also in action Friday for the Rams were Ashton Hallsted and Tarynn Sieg in the women's weight throw. Hallsted took third place with a throw of 65'10.5'', while Sieg finished right behind her at 63'1.5''. Both will return to the circle tomorrow for the shot put starting at 12:00 p.m. MT.
Â
Lauren Gale lines up for the 400 at 11:50 a.m. MT and later for the 200 at 1:25 p.m. MT. Meanwhile, Dawson LaRance makes his CSU 800 debut at 1:15 p.m. MT.
