Rams Eager for Competition Ahead of Friday’s Wyoming Power Meet
FORT COLLINS – Back to competing after two weeks off, the Rams will jump right into a rivalry-type setting with The Border War as they travel up I-287 to Laramie for Friday's Wyoming Power Meet at the War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Â
The last time the Rams competed in Laramie was April 27, 2018 in the outdoor season at the 7220 Invite. However, you must go another year back to Dec. 9, 2017 for the last time the Rams have stepped foot into the War Memorial Fieldhouse. For perspective, one current student-athlete, Maria Muzzio, competed at that meet, throwing the shot put 46'4'' and weight throw at 46'9.50''. The now graduate student has personal records of 53'3.5'' in the shot put and 56'9.25'' in the weight throw since her freshman year at the 2017 Wyoming Power Meet.
Â
Originally scheduled as a dual meet, the event has turned into a three-team affair with Air Force tagging along to make it a battle of Mountain West schools. For the Rams it will be a meet for the sprints, jumps and throws with the long distance sitting this one out.
Â
"Anytime we go up to Wyoming to compete, you can feel the added competition with the rivalry between the schools," head coach Brian Bedard said. "Especially since it is in their facility, they will bring a lot of energy and competitiveness which will be good for our student-athletes to go up against compared to just training. They are itching to go up against anybody that is not their training partner. They look forward to it and us as coaches do too."
Â
With close to 50 student-athletes preparing to compete, Friday will be more of a litmus test on where the Rams and individual student-athletes stand with three weeks to go until the Championships at the Peak – this year's indoor championship on Feb. 25-27th.
Â
"We've been cleaning up some technical and competitive issues," Bedard said about training since the opener. "If someone had difficulty on the first meet with an aspect, we've been trying to minimize their errors and get them feeling confident again. That is a case-on-case basis too as we had a lot of great things happen two weeks ago as well. In those cases, we are trying to build off that success. Additionally, some athletes are still working on their fitness depending on what their situation was like over holiday break. We are getting closer there which is good considering the indoor version of our championships coming up."
Â
Two areas that will be more of a go this weekend are the multis and jumpers who eased into competition at the Air Force Invite. The multis sat out the heptathlon and pentathlon events and instead worked a few events but this weekend they will be in four events, so essentially a quad-type competition. Similarly, the jumpers were not running full approaches at the first meet but will be in full swing on Friday for what looks to be a competitive battle.
Â
"It is Allam's [Bushara] birthday tomorrow and I think birthday boy is going to have a big day," Bedard inferred. "Quincy [Howe], Wyoming's jumps coach, does a great job with that event group, so there will be great energy surrounding that area in the long and triple jump." Â
Â
In the throwing circle, Mariano Kis will look to continue his momentum from the AF Invite that saw PRs and top-20 school marks in the shot put and weight throw. On the women's side, All-American Tarynn Sieg is set to make her season shot put debut, while Gabi McDonald looks to make her CSU debut.
Â
The meet starts at 1:30 p.m. with the last event starting at 5:15 p.m. Spectators will not be allowed at the meet, and results will be posted at the conclusion.
